Hi Guys,

Was planning on starting my turbo engine last night, but spent ages sorting the mk1 electronic ignition and then sorting the fuel, (pump was on the wrong way)!!!!!!!!!!

Then when i went to fire her up at around 1am the battery seemed to be lacking power! probably due to trying it so many times. I would like to replace the battery with one from a diesal car, someone suggested fitting a battery from a 306 dturbo, does any no if this will be ok or can someone please suggest a suitable battery?

What size are the nuts that connect the track rod end to the hub arm?

Thanks,

Paul.

halfords do a heavy duty mini battery thats what ive got and it seems to be very good my mini sits in the garage for weeks without being used with the alarm set and when the engine is hot and its been left for about 15mins+ mine takes a lot of cranking to fire her up and touch wood the batterys done its job. down side is it costs about 45 quid *smiley*

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

Do what everyone else would do and measure your battery box, then pop to halfords with a tape measure and get the largest Amp/Hr battery that will fit...

You shouldn't have a problem with cranking - these aren't high compression engines after all...

Check your engine earth by putting a voltmeter between a good earth point on the engine (rover cover nuts are a good start) and a bare, clean bit of metal on the bulkhead. If you see more than 0.25 volts registered under cranking, your engine earth is bad.

Also do the same thing on your existing battery earth, except between the battery terminal and a clean bit of metal (rear of seat for example). I'd say you shouldn't be seeing more than 0.2volts drop at this point.

Finally, get a long piece of wire (doesn't have to be thick - just the size of the majority of wiring in your loom) and connect to the end of the long battery wire at the battery end. Connect the other end to one terminal on your voltmeter, and hold the other terminal of your voltmeter at the main battery cable at the starter. If you see more than 1.5 volts along this cable under cranking, then there is a problem. It could be shorting out, be damaged, or (if the inertia starter) the solenoid could be at fault.

oh, the ball joints are meant to be 9/16" AF spanner size - with a 3/8" UNF thread. Most aftermarket ones are metric however - probably 15-17mm AF and a 10mm thread...

Trackrod end top nuts vary! I had to buy a new trackrod end in an emergency one day, just for the nut because it got mixed up!
