I this sounds daft but i remember someone a while back was thinking about using an ally exhaust to save weight, and it was a knoledgable person too IIRC.

i made myself one way back in 94 i think it was, the single back box was about 300mm wide with rounded sides, the pulses from the exhaust gasses fatigued it on the top and bottom due to having big flat areas,i welded it up a couple of times but soon got sick of it so had one hand made in steel at Tony Law exhausts here in leeds.

The standard can on my bike is made from alloy not sure how well they last as I changed it for a race one but they are used on bikes by quite a lot of people with no problems so can't see why a car would be different |

5mm thick? So , it's heavier than a steel box then... On 13th Jul, 2012 Ben H said:

There is a 206gti that races in the Hot Hatch race series. It seems to be holding up, and its the same one that has been on all year. However it does limited mileage so i wouldn't be sure on road mileage. |

Corvette Z06 uses titanium. $$$$ to save a claimed 17 pounds. Since a mini exhaust is much smaller, I bet you're looking at saving maybe 6 pounds. Aluminum is lighter than titanium though. 1275 with Back Door Turbo |

But you'll need five times the amount of material to make it equally strong... So, the consensus is: Aluminium alloy exhausts, the suck! End of discussion. Also, the dissapate heat quicker which also sucks. On 13th Jul, 2012 Ben H said:

Here's another thought, a longer system will run cooler more often and get quite a bit of acidic condensate, this will burn through it in no time. A bike can will run hot and so not really suffer from this. I suppose you could coat it but the expansion/contraction of this would probably flaw the surface anyway.
Bugger off, I'm getting there. |
