I'm currently toying with the idea on putting my mini on a diet and was after a few opinions from people who have done this sort of thing before.

It's a road car so needs to be vaguely practical but it's not used everyday.

The things i was thinking of were:

Strip out backseat and trim etc.
Remove stereo
Poly for the back and side windows
FG bootlid and bonnet
Cutting out rear bins and seat base
Removing heater

The biggest question is, if i do all that will it really make a noticeable difference? I'm not sure what more i could cope with doing but don't want to lose all my comforts for nothing.

It's an n/a 1330 with a touch over 100 nana's so it's not slow, but for the sake of reliability i don't want to go much further with the engine and this seems like the way forward to me.

What do you reckon?
Calum

Every little bit of weight saved helps. Timed against the clock you may well see a difference, the bonnet, boot and glass replacements are good weight savers. Whether you will notice it when driving on the road is another matter though.

ill let you know in a couple of months, lol. my mini was stripped out any hows no carpet or stereo etc. ive now bought fibreglass doors, fibreglass bonnet/ front end, fibreglass boot lid and il be getting perpex windows. but for next year my engine will be the same as this year so ill be able to see how much of a difference it makes.

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

weightsaving is *the* way to get decent times. Look at nics car, mega-fast!

Then, sell all your heavy bits and buy a turbo! *wink*

Sounds like it's time to start pulling it apart then.

Are there any cheap/easy weight savers i've missed out on?

Betwix Harrogate and York

The first part of weight saving is cheap and easy (i.e. ripping everything out) but after that it's expensive.

i was thinking of alloy sheet for my boot floor (spare wheel well). Anyone done this? keeping rear subframe so do you think it needs the strength of a steel boot floor or will this be ok for a road car?

rear beam axel?? is that worth it?

also the sound deadening that is stuck to the floor and back seat area weighs a bit.
think you need to chisel it out though, dose it leave a mess? im planning on doing it to mine once its off the road!

surly the bonnet and boot lid dont weigh that much?

cheers

compaired to the standard bonnet and boot the fiberglass and even more so the carbon items are a hell of a weight saving. especialy on a clubby front. the standard bonnet must weigh somewhere round 20kg - 25kg on a clubman. my fiberglass one is about 1/4 the weight and its bloody good thick fiberglass too.

doh! why did i start messing with it!

Shropshire.

I would agree, you can save loads of weight by replacing parts but at cost, i have a carbon roof, fibreglass front end, boot lid and rear valance. Swapped the glass for polycarbonate and stripped the inside. i wanted that racer feel!

well, i've stripped out all the interior, ditched the spare wheel and stereo.

I'm quite amazed at the difference tbh, seems to be a lot more responsive.

Looking forward to getting more done to it now

get a set of scales and weigh everything you take off, you'll be suprised when its added up!

I pulled a bucket full of bitumen type soundproofing out of a metro van, that alone was around 2 stone IIRC.
