hi

iv done a search but not found the exact answers to this.

how much weight would i save if i was to fit a rear beam axel?

im looking at this one on ebay....

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...mMakeTrack=true

would it be any good for a weekend blaster/trackday/drag type of mini? or am i looking at the wrong type of axle?
also does it make it handle a bit strange, or better than normal once its all set up propaly?
i would use normal ruber cone type suspension up front with the gaz adjustable i have at the mo.

what do you lot think that have carried out this conversion or looked into it think??

cheers

That with alloy rear arms would be nice...

Bound to be a good weight saving.

has anyone done a step by step guide to fitting one with pics etc??
would be interested in seeing exactly whats involved etc.

im just trying to make my mini as light as possible, as thats the trick with minis imo, power to weight ratio and handling!

I have used the ones Min-Its supply and here is the fitting guide.

Jack up rear of car

Remove rear subframe (try not to drop it on your leg, it will hurt)

Drag old subby out of the way (don't hurt yourself .. it's heavy!!!)

Remove and recondition if neccessary the radius arms.

Bolt on the beam axle .... well actually fight with it balanced on 2 bottle jacks that keep falling over every time you move anything.

Give up, get a friend to help .... if you don't have any friends go to the local pub and try to make one

With help it will bolt in nicely un under 5 mins!!!

Bolt up the radius arms.

Fill the holes used on the rear mounting points for the original frame.

Make up a rear mounting point for the exhaust hanger.

Make sure everything is tight and lower car to the ground.

Go enjoy!!!!!!

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

having fitted a (speedex?) beam I would go for the minispares exruded alloy beam,

i was not overly impressed with the quality of the steel beam i fitted, it needed modding so an exhaust could be fitted and the outer radius arm holes were just long ovals made with a gas axe.

also the minispares one bolts on in more places to make it stiffer.

also stevie, they are alloy arms, you can tell by the bosses on the top and bottom of the arm,

I was just going to make the same point. This beam is/was known as the speedex type beam and it flexed to buggerry. The handling was poor with any tyres that had reasonable grip.

This is why I use this one

There is a bracket on the outer end which bolts throught the beam into the original subframe mounts in the floor.

Don't bother for a road car - for a competion car be careful as it will illegal for some types/classes of motorsport.

cheers people.

it going to be a weekend mini to suprise the odd chav etc and to do trackdays and avonpark etc.

im just trying to think of things that would make it as light as possible and and handle well etc.

what differnces have you found once you have fitted it?
does it feel quicker at accelerating and handle better etc?

reading the posts above its fairly stright forward to fit if you buy it as a kit?

has any one got a link to the minispares alloy one as i carnt find it on there site!!

cheers

Other than weight saving I have found no benefit at all! Infact it might be said that the handling is slightly worse than a subframe but I have not proved it either way.

so you wouldnt recomend it then?
i thought the more wight you got out of the car the quicker the acceleration and handling to a certian extent.

Why ??

Would severly lightening the rear end, make it more likely to go airbourne, when you dont want ?
