Has anyone had any experience with working out import Tax for goods being shipped from the U.S to the U.K?

After searching the web for hours and can't seem to get any kind of figures for how to work it out?

Any halp would be MUCH appreciated!

17.5 %

when the goods enters the uk you then have to pay VAT on it,

If it's less than 'declared' 18UKP I believe it is exempt. Even writing 'gift' on the parcel and tying bows and bells to the bugger isn't a cast-iron guarantee you won't get stung.

It depends on what you are importing. http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalW...=HMCE_CL_001454

The other problem is that customs also charge you £20 just for looking at the box and deciding that it needs tax paying.

Ive rarely found customs to charge for looking....Parcel Force do though.

Most car stuff is 4.5% import duty, followed by 17.5% VAT on good plus shipping costs, then if the courier wants a bit too with handling charges.

IMO FedEx are the best courier of all. Worth paying the extra. They bill you later for duties, which makes sorting disputes easier.
UPS, USPS ( Parcel Force ) operate a COD policy.
You dont pay up, you dont get your parcel, regardless if its right or wrong, or if the duty has been calculated wrong.

Doesnt matter if its a gift or not, if its over £18, duty is liable.

Bloke at work got a r/c helecopter from the states of ebay, got it put down as being sent here for repairs Hence import duty free.
They chased him up for a bit to see when it was going back,so he told them it was beyond economical repair and had binned it.

I imported £1500 worth of car parts from OZ and I had to sign a form saying "I am liable to pay import tax on this" but even with this declaration they only charged me for handling and not tax! Fair enough, the money was here waiting on them but if they don't want it fine!

What is it exactly your are importing Matty?

duty is 3% on most auto goods and if buying from third would country's except china it can be reduced to 1.5% with right cert.
what a lot of people dont realise is you will pay duty and vat onthe cost of shipping as well as the goods.

Jay#2 - i'd keep it to one side customs are liable to come looking for it at some point.

please guys be careful when importing stuff into the country, as customs have more power than the police and can search your home/premisise without a warrent!

if you have any questions feel free to pm me, i'll be more than happy to help anyone out.

I was looking at importing a guitar, but ive heard so many different fees that are charged!

I got a code 9207901000 and that came up with what seems to be the right catagory with a charge of 3.2% but looking elsewhere and speaking to my uncle he said it was 6% (+ VAT).

Ive also been told that VAT is only added on the value of the goods NOT the carriage!

Confusing!

Its coming from the US. Just spoke to someone on some helpline there now telling me it is 3.7 % from that code I gave them, and this is added on the total value including postage/insurance and then VAT is added on after everything else?

Postage is £138 excluding tax!!!

i purchased my snowboard from the states (worked out at £280) and that came by fed ex, there was no import fee, however i then got some bindings at the bargain price of 63 pounds, these were delivered via USPS, when they got to the UK parcel force took over, i was charged the 17.5% vat PLUS another 13 quid by parcel force for having to add it! my bindings turned out to be not so much of a bargain thanks to parcel force! avoid them if you can!

USPS, the regular postal service in America can seem like a cheaper option. Until Parcel Force get their mits on it.

Ive used and had bother with pretty much every courier out there. No-one comes close to Fed Ex.

I spent about 7 months trying to clear up wrong duty charges with UPS. I was fortunate, that the plonkers left me my goods, before any duty had been paid.
Basically they tried to charge me duty on say £850, instead of $850.
They must have re-calculated about 5-6 times, and still they couldnt get it right. I insisted I would pay, only when the amount was correct.

Again, I was fortunate that all my receipts etc in this case were 100% above board, and I had kept them. If I hadnt.....not sure how it would have turned out.
Also, if UPS had done their normal thing....I wouldnt have received my parts, until paid them the incorrect duty, which was almost double what it should have been.

After many many letters and phone calls...the matter dissappeared, and I paid nothing.
