I went to visit my folks over the weekend and not only had my carb rebuild kit arrived (thanks Iain) but my Mum was away which meant I could rebuild the carb in the warmth of the kitchen rather than the workshop which is rather cold this time of year, anyway I digress.

I've rebuild SUs before but only HS carbs not HIFFs and I'm having trouble in getting my head round the choke on the HIFF. On the HS the choke opens the throttle slightly and lowers the carb jet to in order to enrich the mixture, however the choke on the HIFF appears only open the throttle and not enrich the mixture, is this right or have I missed something?

Secondly what does this screw do:

There's a replacement one in the rebuild kit but I can seem to get the old one out, all it does is spin round which is a bit worrying.

My turbo carb don't have a screw there just a plug.

The choke opens a fuel bypass inside the carb to richen the mixture

The bi-metallic strip in the float bowl acts a bit like a choke too i think, lowering the jet when cold or is that bs?
