I've searched for;

driveshaft
driveshafts
drive shaft
drive shafts
CV
joints

..
..etc.....

all without an answer.

So then, what is "THE" driveshaft set up of choice with members of this forum???

In the past I have used std inner CV's with 1750 allegro outers machine to fit. Only problem is I can no longer get the allegro joints locally :(

I am looking to build a near built proof car this time as my other half, as loverly as she is, kills cars!!!!!!!!!!!

Any info appreciated...

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

I use the totally standard pot-joint, shaft and CVs.

I have only had one failure of a pot-joint, it cracked in half. But with 7" super sticky slicks and more emergency starts than normal I think this is acceptable.

Exactly!!!! 850 ones are less abused than 1275 ones right? :) Get some 850 Automatic ones for good measure.

These are the shafts that came out of a 1978 mini - and they're still being used.

Guess I don't even have enough torque to break a measly 850 shaft eh?

I KNOW that you are VERY wrong about 'half the diameter' Russ. The standard shaft is around 1" or so; I've yet to see a 1/2" diameter driveshaft personally.*oh well*

sorry Dave last time i looked at the crappy thin type i cut them off the car with an angle grinder and put them in the bin. i know i should have gone out and got a micrometer and checked there diameter propery but i didnt.lol

Dave, what i was getting at is that some minis have very thin drive shafts (look about half the diameter) and most dont. in stating get 850 driveshafts people would be rushing out to get the thin type as fitted to some cars. yours may have the normal size shafts but there not the only type

Nope but it was for my mates Caterham ...LOL

An 850, the mythical 1 lady owner to the shop and back to fetch some tea ckaes for the vicar car ... no drivetrain abuse there .......

I am trying to think where the turned down Maxi / Allegro CV's came from??? I must have modified a dozen sets over the years. It probably came from the Autograss world as when I was a teenager I went out with a girl who's family were big in the world of autograss ..... apparently. I suspect that I was told by them to use them, can't remember.

All I know is that if you guys are right, which I don't doubt, I wasted a lot of valuable drinking time ... :(

I used to be quite involved in Autograssing, using the Maxi 1750 CV's was a popular mod for the grass, simply as they receive the kind of abuse that you cannot match on the road, mostly from jumping/landing under full power.

However for our use standard late disc CV's (larger than drum type) in good order will do the job fine.

I thought the maxi CV's used a larger (shaft) spline than the mini CV?

They aren't too bad to get on there Dave.

The reason I ask about driveshafts is that I went to pull some parts of my old turbo mini for the new build, as they will be replaced with fresh when I get around to my own car, and was reminded as to why I took the car off the road in the first place. I'll try to get a picture up here but my camera is knackered and my girlfriends requires a degree in photographic skills just to turn it on.

Basically both other CV's have broken ball cages (sounds painful) and the nearside one has disintergrated to the point it's more like dust than anything recognisable!

As I have also broken an inner pot joint in a simialr fashion to Wil and my girlfriend managed to destroy a joint so badly on her 1.3 Polo (lost it on junction of motorway slip road!!!) that we never did find the shaft I am abit nervious of letting her loose with a turbo'd mini on standard parts!!!!!

Maybe I should just set the throttle so she can't get more than 50% ...LOL

Stupid question, but I can't find the answer, are the drive shafts for disc brakes interchangeable with the drive shafts for drum brakes?

(I realise the outer CV joints & hub are different)

The reason I ask is that my next project has drum brakes at the moment and I'm trying to work out what bits I'm going to need to convert it to discs.
