I have a couple of blocks that need a quick hone before new pistons are fitted. I usually get this done at the machine shop but as I have two to do and they both need nothing else doing I thought 'd tackle it myself.

So, and advice on honing tools and tips on how to do it?

Cheers

I used one of these on my 1275.

Run it slowly in a variable speed electric drill and keep it moving axially with lots of lubrication. You can get a good 20-30 degree finish.

Not as good as a proffesional job by a long way but will help new rings bed in.

The trick is to get it near enough to the top of the block without it poping out!

For what the guy I use charges I'd always take blocks to him rather than do it myself. He'll do a far better (e.g. even/more consistent job) with the proper machine rather than what I could manage by hand.

Toms right once again.

Not worth the trouble, you'll never get the cross hatch at the right angle. Let the machine do it right

I'd recomend Head Shop UK in Warrington.*wink*

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I just bought a Draper one, going to give it a bash. Cheap engine does not justify expensive machining operations as parts are within tolerance..

The stones align themselves, the flex bit stops the operator honing at an angle, lots of Lube needed though.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

take it to DRAKES at bradford
they have a CNC borer & honer and they get it right to the micron at 20c everytime!!

thats where all my blocks go wil *Yes* *wink*

if you hand do it, as done for many years at most machine shops

you will get say 0.001" top 0.002" middle and some where in the btm 0.000.5"

in effect its like a hour glass and blocks done on their honer pick up between 4 to 6bhp and make more power for longer + the rings bed in 100%

I see, How much are you charged for a standard hone?
I assume you'v had blocks bored to say 4thou undersize then honed the last 4..?
Or do they do clean-up hones?
I just thoguht that the machining operation +postage Each way makes it not very accessible to amateurs ( Moi )
