cant get 3rd and 4th

Hi guys, just bought a 998cc metro to break, but after looking at it in the daylight, its in absolute tip top condition body wise, with just a scruffy interior.
So might put £50 of tax on it and sell it on.

The reason I got it so cheap is the bloke told me the box had gone, but on coaxing it back to out garage, its only 3rd and 4th that wont select (the gearstick wil go across, but wont go up to 3rd, or down into 4th, no matter how easy/harsh you are iwth the stick), 1st and 2nd are fine..which i havent come across before.

Ill check the linkages out this weekend, hoping it will be an easy/cheap fix, but if its not the linkage, what do you guys suspect?

my ex had this with her mini - it was jammed in 1st - she managed to wrench it back to neutral, but it wouldn't do anything other than 3/4/R thereafter.
I stripped the box only a few months ago- and it was a broken selector - the area that the selector finger drops into for each gate; one side had broken clean off.

Full trans stripdown to fix.

im now thinking this might have the other selector broken...

Doesn't sound worth the effort of bothering to me for a breaker of a 998cc metro....

I had a box like that,you had to sort of bang it accross like going for reverse to get 3rd and 4th,then bang it accross the other way to get 1st and 2nd.
Drove about 500 miles with it like that then ripped the engine out and sold it for £100 with a spare box

i need a spare 998 for something how much ofr the engine and box?

Either way I was going to keep the engine as a spare anyway Dev, sorry bud.

Plus its a ballache getting engines across the water anyway, surely 998's arent that thin on the ground yet?

i know 2 people who have them and niether will sell. they dont even use 'em.

Needs to be standard as well

dev got a 998 on a sub frame with disc brakes - completely standard from a 998 city done about 60000 miles need rid of it so its yours for a senisble price if your intrested - sorry for hijacking the thread

hi, we have a new (bar 300 miles aprox) compleate new 998, box, carb, everything to run. we dont use them, think we will hang onto it for a few years and see about getting rid of it then. used ones only go for a few quid on ebay. these were just under £1000 minus the gearbox about 3 years ago from minisport, think they are unabaliabe new now

great news, found the culprit:



the bushes are fecked, bodged it solid and took it round the block and its fine, will order some new bushes on monday.

can anyone confirm what these bushes are called?

would presume they are the "rod change selector bushes", or somesuch, but not turning anything up on the net...

I used the shorter exhaust mountings on mine.

They are the same as the ones used on Minis, gear selector bushes/mounts?

I know for a fact Min-its sell these as I have bought some before.
