Ouch, no messing about. Yeh blocks all good, still looking for some standard (non melted *tongue* ) pistons. The splitties, i love em.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

HI and welcome

its a combination of too much boost and too high a compression ratio coupled with too lean a mixture which has killed the pistons

this is the fineist Example of detonation i have ever seen........WOW!*surprised*

you need to get clued up on this before it happens again for sure!!!!*wink**wink*

in the mean time i
*if you hear a ping....*frown*................ or pinking lift your foot*

What was it - standard pistons, head and 1bar of boost?

Thats called driving it hard for 4 months with broken rings, piece of ring get stuck to piston, creates hotspot..... hence melted piston...

Yep it's running about 10:1 compression ration as the head was skimmed and 15 psi boost but i have been running it like that for 2.5 years and this is the first time i have done a piston like that.

I am running a/f ratio meter, it didn't lean out.

As for hearing pinking...hmmmm on a full s/c c/r box you can't hear a thing.... lol....

I am running a 2wd cossy intercooler, with air charge temp guage... when it went it was runnin 19 degrees... so not hot....

On a 7 mile thrash (on a big straight road) holding it at 6000rpm and 20psi boost was only running 40 degrees so i think it's quite efficient

You ran 20psi on 10-1 compression, what octane fuel you running ? what ignition timing ?

18-20-degrees advance will probably reduce the detonation (and power lol) to run that kinda boost Phil :)

That does really look like it's been detonating for a long time - not just in the last few minutes of its life.

Hey - welcome all the same. Hopefully you'll find some ideas on making one that will be a little more suited to boost from a CR standpoint..... :)

I always run it on Shell Optimax or whatever it is now.... (never use tesco 99 Ron stuff)

I run the timing quite retarted.

I have got a new engine on the way but i got to finish paying for it first... so my 100k 1000cc engine with my turbo running 15psi at the moment to last me a few months......

I have been sripping my old engine down today, got the pistons out my suspicions were right. The ring had broken on piston No 4, it has slowly worked it's way up the piston and out by the crown where it has been mangled about a piece has travelled back therough the inlet port into cylinder 3 where it has got stuck down the side of the piston and created a hotspot and melted a hole in it. The other pistons are fine. The one with the hole in it has got none of the normal signs of detonation, the pitting round the sides of the crown.

This is No4 piston that had the broken ring, you can see where it had slowly worked up and down in the piston untill it had broken through.

This is number 3 piston

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

Welcome to TM Pete.

Sorry to hear about the damage - looks to be proper knackered.

Are you gonna open up a build thread for the new un ?

Richard.

Minivanless, but reluctantly happy living with the decision. There'll be another one day.
