You can keep winding the boost up but at some point you meet the law of deminishing returns, ie. all the extra boost just goes to heat the charge and thus lower charge desity thus reducing the combustion efficiency.
If this happens after a decent intercooler then you get the to the point you keep increasing the boost and power stays the same or drops.
If your unlucky the engine just detonates itself to pieces .....

For the record I've run 20psi (8.3:1 CR)but not for long, went back to 17psi as I was getting nothing extra and feared a dead engine. With modern cams and better turbos I'm sure people ar running in the 20's happily

Engine spec

1293 with Omegas
Avonbar high boost Turbo head (can't remember what they called it)
original Avonbar turbo cam 1.3 roller tip rockers
T3 turbo on mety manifold

About 160BHP depending on the rollers (saw 171BHP at interpro once but sure that was optimistic). Nice enough to drive if you kept it 3500+ but ran out of revs at around 6600, power dropping sharply after 5750ish

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

I ran and abused mine daily at 1.5 bar, CR was around 7.5:1

Long time ago. Of course 20psi with a small turbo, isnt the same as 20psi with a big turbo. And all engines are different, so boost is not a good measure of performance at all.
In fact, its rather pointless on its own.

Amen to THAT!!!!

Big numbers impress chavs - the types of chavs that have no idea if a 12 sec 1/4 is good or bad...

And the sort that think a pod filter and associated sticker adds about 30-40bhp.

the name of the game is to generate as much HP through as little boost as possible

As the guys said, get everything as efficient as possible first then turn the boost up.

Power by boost alone a dead engine soon makes ....

Surely not .... the adverts claim at least 10% and we all know a 1L Saxo comes out of the factory with 200BHP!!!!

I've run just over 30 psi, but can't get a clutch to cope with that much boost

Yeah i know that the engine needs to be efficient. I was just wondering how high some nutter had cranked up the boost without his rings frying of head gasket making funny noises

Forgotten more than most ever know

Mate had a huge Holset in his Mini. Really a pile of crap honestly. CR was reduced by machining the piston tops so that the pistons were 4 mm down in the bore at TDC. Then there was a locked dizzy to supply something like 20 degrees advance. All in all, the engine did not see any boost below 4000 rpm. Any std 1275 would blow the doors off ... until it came on boost. In an instant it hit past 1,5 bar. We then backed the wastegate settings to keep it around 1 bar because my mate had no idea what the engine spec was. I would imagine that judging the amount we had to adjust the wastegate we would have hit 2 bar easily. Absolute PITA despite the boost setting.

I have accidentally hit past 1,5 bar with mine (interesting to say the least) but kept it at 1 bar for years.

pmsl, sounds like mine *happy*

Except I took 6mm off the top, and welded dizzy at around 24-28deg. My Cossie compressored T3 built boost rapidly around 36-4000rpm to 1.5bar then flew.
I probably did see more at times, but that was steady readings. That said, I did try for more, and it didnt seem to want to make much more than that, so just left it there.

Cricky ..... what is the difference in charge temps to be causing that? Or is the turbine backing up the exhaust preventing charge scavenging?

Can't think of anything else but might have missed something...
