Cast your minds back to the rolling road day, well some of you may remember my head gasket going. It also went a few days at York(get you back WIL H!).

Anyway, today i decided to get cracking and take thing to bits to seak out the problem. Both head gaskets had gone in the same place, through where the 11th stud goes on the water pump side, this is probably the thickest point of the gasket.

It turns out the block is warped, despite it being totally flat from the machine shop when it was acid dipped, rebored, honed, skimmed etc it seems to have warped.

The block i suspected had been cooked as the bearings i took out of it were very scorched, the block, crank & rods were bought second hand for ?30 and i did'nt know the history of it all.

So if you build and engine with an unknown block just be carefull. A new block has been sourced and will be together as soon as it takes.

The phase 2 will be going back in and the 3 will be turned into an expensive paperweight...2 is best!

The pistons and bores are spotless and the head is fine.

IT WILL BE BACK!!

Might even go on a diet for avon park as 104kg is a slight disadvantage.

Jon, why do you not like the phase 3 cam ?
I have both a phase 2 & 3 handy, i'm just about to install the cam in the next day or so. I would appreciate any opinions on cam choice.

Cheers
Phil. *smiley*

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

I always thought that old blocks were the ones to buy as they had been through enough heat cycles to stablise?

When i get mine done ill have it heat treated at work after, if its good enough for gas turbines its good enough for me!

Allthough the ph 3 is good for big top end power and higher revs it seemed to wash out the mid range, did 2 rolling road sessions(?300) to iron out the flat spot but no joy. Obviosly had i spent days on a dyno maybe the flat spot could have been sorted but i live in the real world where time and money are an issue. The phase 3 let me do 7200 in top though!..scary!..in top i repeat!..anyone else pull those revs?

the 2 is never gave me this mid range problem and with the drag racing thing you need that wide power band.

For a track car only i would use the 3 provided you had the right gearing for the tighter corners.

Iain - the trick is to use a 'seasoned' block - but ideally one that hasn't been cooked!!!

Definately one to remember for the future.
