Just generously been given a mini for free it is in need of repair but you cant falt it for free. I do not have the log book will it be possible to get a new one from the DVLC. I belive it to be a mk2 mini.

The plate on the engine reads 99H353E-H350904
The red plate by the front of the engine bay reads N2OS-156562A
The black plate reads XA2S1-N-762858A

Can anybody tell me any information from the numbers i have give you any help much appreciated.

Do you have the registration number? I think you will need this in order to apply for a new logbook, I don't think you can do it using chassis numbers alone.

There are no plates on the car is there any where i can look for the reg no on the car other than the obvious, i thought i could look for it on the log book if i am successful in getting a replacement to get new plates made. This may be more difficult than i thought .... HELP PLEASE!!!

ring dvla. up once you get through there shitty phone system they should be able to help you.

they may be able to give you a reg no by using the chassis number, once youve got the reg then itll cost you £19 to apply for a new log book.

thats easiest way surely?

Edited by Carl on 15th Dec, 2006.

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

This will be no problem at all so long as the following points apply

1) the previous owner (registered keeper in DVLA speak) is willing to sign a letter saying that the vehicle has been transfered to you.

2) the previous owner was legally the owner of the car (some times not if the car has been passed around a bit whilst being off the road).

3) the chassis number doesn't exist on anything else on the DVLA register (only usually a problem with a shell, very rare if there is a whole car)

4) Car has been UK registered

5) original registration wasn't transfered off the vehicle leaving it with no reg number at all.

6) car has never been registered as dismantled / scraped.

7) car has not been recorded as a cat A or B write off (again rare if it looks like a car not a cube of metal or pile of parts)

If any of the above (other than 6& 7) and you'll have a fight on your hands ..... Points 6& 7 is a definate no-no.

If none of the above apply you will have to do the following.

Apply for the original registration to be recovered which is not too nasty or expensive.

Once the car is returned to a drivable condition it will need to be trailered to a local DVLA centre (if the original chassis and engine numbers are retained as per the reg doc) or an SVA test centre if the numbers have been changed. Don't worry about the "SVA" it's really a super MOT rather than a full SVA and is cheaper (approx £150 IIRC).Obviously best to retain the original engine if possible until after the registration to make it easier and cheaper!!!

If you get it inspected at a DVLA local centre you will need to get it MOT'd against a chassis number then wait (upto 6 weeks) for the DVLA to issue you a V5c. If it's been for the "super MOT" at SVA test centre they will do it for you and can issue you the document there and then.

It sounds hairy but it's all forms and red tape, no horrors so long as your not trying to pass it off as something it's not. Beware though it you plan major mods (ie to the shell) as you will then have to prove it is the original one for the reg you are trying to recover!!

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Forgot to say make sure you keep the original plates if you remove them to do panel repair or paint ....... invaluable

If it all looks like a non event you could always get hold of a register Mini that is beyond economical bodywork repair and 'reshell' it into your good shell.

The chances are you will then end up with a Q plate (as the history of the shell would be hard to prove) but at least you could put it on the road!!

Last resort though

Or you could do as hundreds of other mini owners have done and buy a donor of a suitable age, attach the chassis plates, regf plates and change the colour and engine number on the V5, and off you go...........

Not strictly legal, but if you legally own both the shell and the donor car then very hard to prove otherwise.................
