I am wanting to change the starter motor from a pre-engaged type to an intertia starter. I want to do this so that there is some more clearance at the front end of the car. What do i need to change along with the starter motor, do i have to change the flywheel. clutch? Anything else.

Thanks
Luke

To do this you need to either change the flywheel for an early type one, which also means changing the clutch, or the other option is to have the early type ring gear fitted to the flywheel you have.

Also you will need to add a seperate starter solenoid that the pre-84 cars used, this bolts to the inner wing usually.

Ring gears are different between pre engage and inertia so flywheel change is easiest although just changing the ring gear is possible.

You will need to fit a remote starter solenoid and change the wiring to suit.

Out of interest what are you trying to fit in the position of the pre-engage sol' ???? It's not that big and there is only block and dizzy near it.......

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Tom beat me to it ...

I have both pre engaged and inertia verto flywheels, think early Metros ran inertia ... changing in '84ish as Tom said.

Don't think any pre verto flywheels left the factory for pre engaged starter though.

Well the clearance thing is that firstly it's a metro that i have, (Mini is the next project when this one is finished).

I have acquired quite a large intercooler that sits lovely right across the front. I have managed to get the radiator to sit in behind it, but now that i have mounted the fan onto the rad, there is no room for the pre engaged started, hence why i am going to fit the inertia starter. I have fitted the megajolt set-up that i have just finished and managed to get running late last night.

Don't suppose anyone has any old bits laying around that they only want cheap money for that may help me to sort my problem. At the moment i am only at the mocking up stage so, once i know that its all working i will of course be buying a new clutch etc.

Well if you had said all that from the start.........

Get a starter (pre engaged) off a mini; the solenoid points upwards rather than forwards, this may create the bit of room you need without lots of buggering about with flywheels etc.

Thought that everyone might have ignored me if they saw that it was a metro and not a mini.

Thanks for the advise on the mini pre engaged starter, i will have to go and have a look for one over the weekend.

Thanks

LOL ..... wouldn't amke a lot of difference to most of us ... one A series is pretty much the same as the next ...

I enjoyed my old metro turbo ... was a giant killer and people sort of expect a Mini to be quick if it's modded .... nobody expects a metro ... great fun!!!

Thats my plan, want the metro to look nothing special but i want it to go like hell. Suppose you are right that one a series is like another.

Already got the thinner fan, thr thing is that the intercooler is quite big, as its from a wrc car, it may be too big, but it was free.

So i have now got the intercooler in, the rad in with the new thin fan on it and its just too close. With the inertia starter fitted it perfect, but the only problem is that it doesn't start, think that i will see how i get on with the pre engaged starter from a mini, otherwise it will have to be the route of changing the flyweel etc.

I re-drilled my flywheel casing and rotated the starter, works a treat!!

If you use the mini starter the solenoid ends up sitting further back than the casing!

You can see how much higher up it is here, and kind of see how far back it sits ompared to the casing. *wink*
