it'll be on a regrind, i think, so should have a smaller base circle. If the others arnt re-grinds you should be able to identify it this way. Otherwise you can measure the difference between the lobe and the base circle to give the lift of the lobes, this will be dramatically bigger than any std cam (if the others are std items), or at least different from other manufacturers camshafts. I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

so...correct me if i'm wrong....the lobes shouldnt be "sharp" ...a phase2 has a more and longer lift ?? |

The ph2 has massively more lift than any std cam, so indeed should look 'sharper', but the only real way to tell is to measure the angles and/or duration, though you could probably decern the cam from the rest by measuring the lift. I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

Put it in the engine, you will tell what it is when you come to set the cam timing

If a cam looks sharper, and the lobe measures lower....then the lift and time off lift should be less?????? or am i thinking the wrong way around? Not that simple, it's the height of the lobe relative to the base circle diameter that gives lift. Using your figures, On 18th Dec, 2006 rena said:
if i measure a std cam ( i think its std) then its 28 mm width and 34 mm high. The phase 2 ( again wich i think it is) is 25 mm widt en 32 mm high an looks a lot smaller and sharper. If the measurements have been taken at the right places, the "width" is essentially the base circle diameter (that might be a bit simplistic for a long duration cam but close enough for the comparison) so your first one has 32-28 ie, 6mm lift. The second one is on a much smaller base circle and has 32-25, ie 7mm lift.... more than the first. It may look "sharper" simply because of the much smaller base circle but without putting it in an engine and measuring the duration, you simply can't tell by looking where the basecircle starts to rise. The second one is a regrind and has more lift than standard so it is most likely the PH2. Edited by Rod S on 12th Sep, 2008. Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ??? |

its because avonbar now only supply billet camshafts as it is becoming very hard to get hold of standard shafts to re-grind.

i think the price you have quoted from avonbar for the phase 2 camshaft is for the full kit,
