Hi,
I just stripped my 998 after it started burning excessive oil.
I built it last year, 12G940 head, pocketed block, MG cam
new bearings and rings

It went well and my intention is to turbo charge it.

I thought it would need a overbore and some new dished pistons,
however, i found the cause of the burning of oil, it has thrown one of the circlips off the gudgeon pin and subsequently the pin has scored a huge gash in the cylinder wall.

the gash is about 1-2mm deep, is this rectified by the largest overbore i can go with a 998?? is it +60??

Also thought i'd check the ring gap whilst it is bits, i have metric feeler gauges, so i got 1.1mm gap, is this big??

Cheers

i've a 998 block in the same state, mine isnt salvageable even with a +80bore. I wouldnt like to use a block thats had this done anyway as essentially the cylinder walls have been bent/forced out of line, i cant imagine that this would ever be good for the block long term.

For future reference, there is a way to stop the circlips from coming out as it is a common occurance on 998 engines which rev in conjunction to using circlip type pistons. The solution is to buy/source/make some teflon buttons to fit inside the circlips, the details are available on this site if you do a searh.

1.1mm is a huge ring end gap, infact i think its double the upper tolerance. You should be looking at aroun 10 thou depending on exact application and rev-range.

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

Right cheers mate

I think i'll use a 1275 engine for my turbo then, i really don't fancy spending 300 quid on pocketing another 998 and getting new bearings fitted etc.

I thought it was a big gap, but that was checking one ring on all cylinders

hi just read you post on whether the 998 block is usable. i dont know whether minispares still do them but they have liners which you can fit into the bore to bring it back as standard?

I have been offered a pocketed A series block, wants about 70 quid. I think its worth the money, forgotten how much i actually paid for pocketeing my A+ block. Anyone had it done lately??

I was gonna sugest the liners, but once the liner is in you'd need to remove the bit where the pocket is anyway, probably not cort effective.

I think I remember Calver saying something about new extra oversize smallbore pistons that he's got from Graham Russell, may be worth a call.
