I learnt something new tonight - when the temp outside gets down to freezing my fridge freezer in my garage turns itself off. Not fussed about the the fridge, but the freezer started to defrost. I guess if it was around -20 outside this wouldn't be a problem! lol We'd been stocking it up so we were lucky to discover this in good time and not have to throw too much away.

I understand this isn't a problem for chest freezers which are generally double insulated, only the drawer type freezer/fridge freezers.

If you have one in an unheated garage, and it's frosty outside you might want to check it's actually working. :)

Ha Ha I knew this

Lol but then it is my trade.

Why didnt you ask Before??

BTW

It only happens to single thermostat 'fridge freezers'. Double thermostat 'fridge freezers' dont normaly suffer from this. Normal domestic fridges and freezers are designed to work in a warm room. When used in a cold garage, the casing sweats and frost can sometimes also be found. Chest freezers are normaly designed to be used in garages so the insulation is thicker to prevent this 'sweating'.

Dont know where you got the double insulated thing. Thats normaly to do with electric power hand tools. Also you describe this problem as happening to all fridges, freezers, fridge freezers that are not 'double insulated' its only single stat fridge freezers. Some one has been giving you duff info
*wink**tongue*

With the combined knowledge of this forum we could rule the world.

And even if we couldn't, we can now at least guarante that we have cold beers while we try.

So basically you need a heater to keep beers cool. this is more confusing than when I first discovered a gas powered fridge when I was 12, it had a flame in it and everything!

MS I never thought to ask before to be honest :) but thanks for the info. The double insulated thing was something I read on the Which website about buying fridge freezers, and I thought they were referring to the construction of fridge freezers.

I shouldn't believe everything I read on the internet lol *tongue*

So while we're off topic, does anyone need to know anything about laparoscopic cholecystectomy? :)

Or diabetic related blindness such as age-related macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy? Or even modifications to proteins through non-enzymatic glacation? We really could rule the world with all this multidisciplinary talent.

To be honest I still dont ACTUALLY know how a gas fridge works, I just assumed if was to do with the cooling of the gas as it changes from a liquid to a gas (sublimation?)

The absorbant is actualy water, the refrigerant is Amonia

The bigger refrigeratoin machines that I work on are up to 6m long by 3m high with cooling capacity of 2.5mega watts use Water as the refrigerant and Lithium Bromide as the absorbant in a deep vacuum.

They use heat to drive the process, hence why in a camping fridge its a gas flame, and in industry, it can be anything. Best one ive seen yet is Shell oil refinery at Stanlow. They use the hot gasoline off the cracker, pass it through a heat exchanger to heat water and then pass that through the machine.

I too was curious as to how, from a flame you get cold. Very odd
