I'm with adrain flux and they were intrested in the total power with nitrous. I pay £325 limited mileage.
I'm not getting into the legal aspect of it thats been discussed before.
My advise is check the wizards of nos forum, its discussed there.

I'd just use it anyway and if you crash, have a piece of pipe with quick-fit fittings you can remove if you stuff it. Insurance companies are pirates and there are lots of other things they will get you on.

I stacked my Morris Minor years ago in the lanes with another woman, phoned up the insurance company to inform them. The first question was "Does your car have a stereo?" No. The reasoning being that if it did, it was modified from the factory and they wouldn't pay.

I ask two questions.

1. If I stuff it, can I keep my car?
2. Can I drive other people's cars?

Then I get the cheapest piece of A4 paper I can show the cops. I have declared all my mods and the roll cage adding 35% to the premium really stings. Next year, I may just insure it as I got it with no known mods. As far as I'm concerned, it's a 998 cooper.

Besides, I also said "just insure it as the most dangerous mini you have in your books" as the spec changes, I really can't be bothered phoning up every time I do something.

As I'm about to ditch the 1380 for a bog std 1275 whilst I rebuild the box, I wonder if that change invalidates my cover. Hmmmm

Bugger off, I'm getting there.

Not sure if they cover NOS but HIC has never let me down in any respect and on any car (except the Porsche they couldn't cover until I was 30). I don't even bother phoning round now as they are always cheapest!!

When I was in London I had no end of rear enders because I drive to the highway code (red lights mean stop, box junctions not entered until an exit is clear etc. etc.) and they always handled the claim quickly with no effort from me and at a body shop of my choice!!!!

The one accident I had that was a so say 50-50 (I was at a junction waiting to turn right and somebody ripped my wing off!!!! Police decided outcome ...) they still where quick and fair.

AF on the other hand took years, not weeks or months, to settle the no fault claim I had with them!!

Anyway all that is slightly off topic .........

i personally think that driving without insurance (which not telling them of mods effectively is .....) should carry the death penalty .....

Always declare any mods, always find a company that is GOOD not just the cheapest (could cost you more in the long run....) and keep a clean licence and insurance isn't too bad .......

Try Greenlight for NOS insurance as that is who my friend uses for his hot-rod and they have no problem with it being on the car.

As for disconecting it there are two problems......

1) they will assume it was on and running at the time of the accident anyway....

2) you can't if your not able to get out of the car for what ever reason .......

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Ha, try living in Northern Ireland where for some dud reason our premiums are about double mainland UK. I knew someone who blew their stock 1275 and threw in a stop gap 998 until it was rebuilt. They rang their insurance hoping for a nice reduction when the girl on the phone said we won't cover those modifications (!) and that they are going to cancel the policy. When asked why the girl said "we are worried about the smaller engine falling out the hole left by the bigger engine". I know right well after paying £300 for my 5k mile premium if I even dare to make a claim it will be "those aren't standard wheel nuts, sorry but we won't cover you". Sorry for going off the track here but I'm easy started when it comes to insurance companies!

OT I know but I have insured all sorts with them.

My turbo'd 4age engined kit, no problem. Previous turbo Mini, no problem. Current 1380 Mini (with cage which the only other person who would quote is Adrian Flux and I would rather walk than insure with those lazy idiots!!) no problem.

Maybe they don't cover NOS, it has a fairly bad rep in the insurance world apparently (not sure why but most don't like it).

From my experiences it is true enough what they say, if you can build it they will cover it ..... apparently not with NOS though from Matt's experiences .....

Having the cage in the Mini has tought me to state the most contentious mod first so as to avoid wasting time these days.

Ever since The Fast & The Furious came out in the cinemas, Nitrous has gone from being a sensible drag racing mod to being a bolt on gimmick used by chavs who can't drive in the first place, and has probably been responsible for a fair few Corsas ending up in trees. Hence the reason insurance companies don't like it.

EXACTLY! Both roll cages and NOS have the same prob, fitting them means your going to race (or worse street race) according to the insurance companies. When I fitted my fiddly wee John Alley 3 point (for the Italian Job look) my insurance was "so your going to be racing then?" I felt like saying if I was I'd fit a wee bit more of a cage than that. But lets face it NOS is for quick blasts and is ideal cheap horsepower for chav traffic light racing.

Yeah I know but it only takes one person to ruin it for everyone else. Maybe some insurance companies might take on board the reason why you want to use it but I doubt it.

I am insured with ecarinsure, do a search on google you will find them. They were very reasnoble since i am only 19 with no claims but 2 years road experiance and drive a 1300 with mods they quoted 625 notes so i bit there hand off as others were quoting 800 and odd, and was driving within the hour. When requesting a quote with them there was a drop down box wich you "have" or not if you choose to, pick your mods and nitrous is one, may be worth a look for the ppl who run it and want to tell there insurance company.
