I am considering building my -98 MPI to a bit retro mkI with the mkI grill, cornerbars and bootlid, but I am wondering about GRP parts. How will a set of GRP bootlid and bonnet fit?? Are they steady or very wobley?? Is a GRP bootlid watertight?? A lot of stupid questions, but I have no experience with GRP parts:$

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

well my opinion is..... stick with the steel because if things go pearshaped with a 180 + bhp turbo motor in at high speeds

you need all the strength in the shell possible

on the road especially!

only my opinion

I have used several sets of GRP panels over the years and I think a lot depends on what you want to do with the car.

I have had double skined panels that don't fit at all (huge gap around mid height on the boot seal) and some that fit better than the steel.

I have had good fitting single skin stuff too but to be fair it's a bit flimsy for road use. My mate had a single skin bootlid once that was so flexible you could open it without turning the handle!

I'd say if quality of fit is the most important thing then stick with steel.

If you are looking for a particular style then it's often much easier to do that with GRP than steel, especially on the bonnet. Lets face it the standard bonnet isn't exactly a great fit to start with is it!

ive got a mk1 bootlid on mine, its a double skin one and fits really well, however i bought it second hand and couldnt tell you where i got it from

the only difference between the mk1 and other bonnets is the lip at the front, you could grind it off your currently bonnet and all will be ok

This is a single skin bootlid:

From the rear it looks OK, but from the side the fit is not that good. I had it pop open at 6000 in top once as well.

For a road car, stick to steel.

I'm running a 0.23:1 FD *wink* It does take a while to get there because it's spinning in fourth and the clutch is slipping at the same time. I guess you know what I mean. And that is with 13"!!! *surprised*

Lol, not the sort of thing I wanted to hear, just as I have really got stuck into my mini minus turbo build!! (full grp shell)

Grp has its place, you can get parts that are a good fit and strength, but if you ever have any doubts or worries, stick with what you know (steel!)

could you make a mk3 boot lid into a mk1 boot lid? by filling the holes were the mk3 light is and fitting a mk1 style light at the bottom?
or will it not work?

cheers

The shape of the number plate area is quite different. There is no limit to imagination though ... something unique is always better if you can be bothered to put the effort in .... at least that is what I think.

I have used mk1 boot lids without the swinging number plate arrangement and have frenched in Mk3 boot lids before my personal fav was a mk1 boot lid with two lights from the bumper of a siera mounted one each side ... nobody else thought so though .. LOL

one of the only reasons why i was going to use grp is so i could get mk1 pannels (boot and bonnet) cheaper, but as nic says aout the bonnet, thats not a big proplem, i bet steel mk1 boot lids are expensive!?

MK1 and MK2 bootlids are externally the same, and quite frankly should be easy and cheap to get hold of.

josh, try Mini Mail. Tim usually has a few knocking around and he doesn't tend towards ripping people off.

I'll ask him if I speak to Tim this week but I wouldn't rely on me at the moment! Busy, busy, busy

Triming the bonnet of a Mk2 onwards to fit a Mk1 grill is easy but a Mk1 grill is rather pricy last time I looked!
