Different kind of load on a gearchange - won't think they would be upto job for long

Sorry????

But if the steering column joints are not up to the job for a gear change, then i doubt they'd be anywhere near suitable for a steering column.

LOL

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I agree with Nick. Steering column joints are designed to work in rotation only. They are not designed to take any axial loads as would be required in a gear linkage.

I think you are both right .... it will be subject to different loads but it isn't unusable if a good joint. All depends on the movement at the pins of the joint. I have seen some joints that are similar to a captive CV ... they would be great ... if a little over the top.

Ralley design sell one suitable, I have over 30,000 miles on a kit car with one in the gear linkage.... it was fine when Quary corner at Combe scrapped the rest of the car!!!

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Forgotten more than most ever know

Anyone driven an old Mini with a sloppy gearchange ? Any decent steering UJ joint will be better and will last for a long time. What kind of loads do you get when changing gears ????

I think that so long as the engine doesn't move too much a steering joint would do fine. However that said I normally run with the standard tie-bar mount, one either side from engine to front member of front frame and ultimate mount and still have movement in the engine from the torque reaction.

If anybody can tell me how to keep the engine still in a road driven, sound proofed car then I'll be a very happy chappy.

socket set ujs are a bad idea, you certainly wont drill and tap for a grub screw ,and welding the chrome moly is always going to be poor practice,
also ,although they may seen a precision item to the feel, try putting some twist into it and it will be as floopy as a very floppy thing.
