a LIL fishing village on the coast - Newcastle Upon Tyne

well after a rumble around the garage looking for potential pistons i un earth'd a block from the deepest realms of "the corner", and out of curiosity thought i would slip a piston out and have a look so i could compare it the other pistons from blocks that i had (obviously to pick the best ones) as i looked closer i noticed it was totally different to the others i had, and on closer inspection i noticed the numbers 28013 which sure enough is MG metty turbo !!! i cant remember why i took the engine out at the time, but i recall one of them i was having issues with oil pressure.
the rings appear in good nick and the pistons dont have any signs of damage (although need a good clean)

the piston on the right is the turbo one.

my question is this:-
1) i have had my engine block worked on ie extra studs, water jacket ported out (at waterpump) center strap done, bores honed (deglazed) oil galleries done and new core plugs. would i be able to transplant the pistons into this block with the present rings, or is this recipe for total disaster ?

cheers

Richie

Depends on what size your block it at, and the same for the pistons too.

tom the piston is exactly same as ones i took out, it just has rings on, the rings have STD on so i presume they are standard ?

Measure them up to be sure, but if they are standard size pistons then putting them into a standard sized honed block should be OK as long as the hone has not removed too much material. I'd recommend checking ring gaps to make sure.

ok the piston slides into the bore nicely and the rings hold it in place. i have gapped the top ring by taking it off the piston sliding into the bore, then squaring it up with the top of the piston (if you know what i mean) and the gap is 13 thou (i think it took a number 10 and number 3 on me old feeler gauges)

is that acceptable ?

Measure the ring dimensions as acurately as you can and give these guys a call http://www.performanceunlimited.co.uk/Contents.htm

I couldnt get any 74mm rings for the old stock Omega pistons i had, rang them and i had a new set of rings a week later. Segment of sugar rock as well *tongue*

Your custom order from the US will be with you in a week*wink*

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Just looked at the Total Seal catalogue and they list the Metro turbo 'Gapless' ringsets in std, 20, 30, 40,

Thats for gapless 1/16th first ring, conventional 1/16th second ring and standard 5/32nd oil ring.

I recon they do a conventional ring set which will be that bit cheaper.

IIRC the Gapless ring set for the 74mm would have been £150, the conventional set me back £85, LOL and a NOS set of Omega rings sold on ebay for £80 plus postage last week.

Recon on £85 and a weeks delivery time *wink*
