Hi all my engine has been playing up latley, no power below 3500 and nothing to shout about after that either... we tried the usual and adjusted fueling and timing but got nowhere, I suspect my cam timing has sliped, but having just riped the head off can anyone give me a diagnois/commenst on the state of the valves before i rip the engine out to check the cam...

spec:
1293 running 11:1 compression
300 deg scatter cam
Hif44 Carb
Megajolt mapped ignition
Morspeeds Tunnel ported Full Race head
stnd rockers

any ideas?

Number 1 looks a bit oily, but otherwise looks ok to me.

You have an MS so you can quickly check the cam timing with the toothed wheel. it won't be that accurate but you'll find out if it's moved.

Did you do a compression test before you took the head off?

probly a silly question, but i'm still recovering from new year, how can i check the cam timing with my toothed wheel? i'm guessing you do it in the normal way but use the teeth on the wheel as the protractor?

oh yeah i did a comp test, everything was fine, number one was very slightly down but nowt to worry about.

You've pretty much got it.

Each tooth is 10 degrees, so you you can check to +/- 5 deg as you have a tooth then a gap then atooth etc.

At TDC you should have your sensor pointing at the ninth tooth. might be worth marking it. then move the engine round and see how many teeth or half teath it's moved when the cam is fully open.

just spoke to ant on the phone and i think he's found the problem, pulley bolts come loose and looks its worn the slot in the pulley or the woodruff key if not both. sure he'll post the findings later though.

Unlucky, I have seen that happen before a few times, and had it happen to me early on in my mini driving days. You will always do the pulley bolt that end up FT from now on......
