Im about to have my block rebored.
I have seen the option to have it rebored with a stress plat (dont know if thats the right word) in place, acting like the cyl head when doing the rebore.
Is this something that is necessary to use when reboring A-series block? (or is there no risk that the cylinders will change shape when putting the head on).

I saw in a recent 'engine masters' magazine (a bi-monthly for pro-engine builders) concrete proof that even on a stout V8 motor, the addition of a torque-plate did make a difference.

It can't hurt, and can only improve matters. The main difference in our turbo engines though, is it's pretty safe to say no-one has built the 'ultimate' engine yet - so maybe any extra cost is little benefit compared to other 'details' that could be done elsewhere?

If it's available, and pretty low cost to include, then do it... :)

So, Dave, when are you changing your head?

Marcel is Guru when it copmes to the A-series. If he says it's not worth it, it isnt.

DON'T BOTHER!

Thanks, I also thought it was overkill. The cost is almost doubled if using torque-plate!

Anybody know what the bore size (metric) should be if using MiniSpares +40 mega pistons?
(Trying to calculate CR to tell if I can use the pistons as is or if Ill have to make the dish bigger.)

I didn't see that answer; Have to agree that if Marcel didn't see it was neccesary, then it is a good reccomendation. That said - the article I read used electronic measuring equipement, and they weren't trying to sell anything - it was just an article...

How you can be bing charge twice the rate is beyond me though...

Vegard, the 16v head craze is so - like - yesterdays news... So I'm going to concentrate on blowing the fudge out of a 5-port before jumping on the K-kit...

LOL

But with no light at the end of the tunnel for the 5 port EFI code (unless you know different) there is always going to be a benefit from having individual inlets per cylinder on the road. Granted there is nothing to be had at top end between EFI and carb (assuming both are set up for peak top end performance) but I bet a K headed car with the same bananas and curly wirlies would be nicer to drive and no doubt much better from low revs out of a corner ... which is the most important thing.... at least to me.

Well, I'll be running an additional unit initially that'll hopefully aid in the 'best method' of injection event for the MS coding - but which could be made available quite easilly afterwards to allow any injection ECU to inject an A-series.
Basically, it's an intercept unit that'll replicate the duration of the injector pulses leaving the ECU, but simply put them in the right place wrt TDC and rpm.

So there is definately light in one respect...

I've mentioned this several times before in the past....

It'll also have a change-over point in there, with a 'gain' adjustment, such that it'll run one injector per intake tract at idle, and at a pre-determined point switcjh to two injectors and half the fuel count, with the gain adjustment there to correct the difference in flow of two versus one....

There will be a few other features aswell - It's all programmed, I'll be running the development system. We know MS is coming, but this is simply a system that'll allow anyone to simply 'plug and play' with an ECU they already have or are familiar with. MS with the code is obviously a more elegant solution... :)

There is always the option of using the Megasquirt router board that is under development.

Quote:

"The router board can simply distribute the injector pulses if you want, but it will also be able to modify them for particular cylinders, etc. See think of it as a 'smart distributor', not just a simple switching device.

It will also be able to operate the injectors simultaneously. Think if it like a EDIS module - it has a crank (and cam signal) and uses the injector/ignition signal as a sort of a 'baseline' setting, from which it can create and adjust the individual cylinder values and timing. "

How did we drift from torque plates. LOL.

It's all here:

It does not do injection advance but can do individual cylinder timing.

Supposed to be available mid 2007.

Forgotten more than most ever know

Reagrding stress plates, there was another article also in Engine Masters magazine. It was about honing the blocks with honing fluid in operation temperature. It seems to make quite a big difference whether the block is in room temp when honing or up to normal running temp. Stress plates and raised temp when honing equals to race engines though not your average street engine...
