I have seen on a webiste a chap who moved the alternator to the back of the engine, thus making room at the front for the intercooler, radiator and oil cooler. The problem is that you can't use a side mounted rad, so my question to you chaps is what rads do you use. This will be in my Cooper so the front will have less space than a clubman. I'm going to use an R5 intercooler on the righthand side (as you look at the car).
Can anyone think of a slim rad that I use?.....or is it a few days searching scrappies?

Thanks, Mark

p.s. unsure if I will go down the route of moving the alternator.....just looking into it.

I asked a similar question (see thred below), and am still considering my options.

Could you post the link to the site with the alternator on the other side of the engine please? *happy*

I did a turbo in a clubby a few years back (std length front end).

We used a mk2 Metro rad, upside down and back to front (fan removed). One front panel mounting bracket was cut to let it sit really low, and allow for a 'butchered' metro top hose to be fitted as the bottom hose (the metro top hose has a really tight 90deg bend in it)

Next, a 2wd cossie intercooler was purchased, and the 'dump valve' take off outlet removed and Tig welded over. This allowed the cossie unit to fit nicely behind the grill, between the lamps, directly in the airflow... As i recall, this did mean the internal release couln't be used, so bonnet pins were called for...

The car NEVER overheated, and had one of the best designs of intercooler around fitted. A cossie 'cooler can be purchased for between ?30 and ?60.

Oh - a small, slimline fan needs to be fitted to the front of the rad (in the centre, using the space from the curve of the front panel). One from a motorbike or the MPi mini one is ideal

I will finish by saying it is sacriledge to fit an intercooler to the side of the engine bay - especially in a clubby, where space is WELL available!
Incidentally, if you want small, effiiceient rad, the smallest and best is the MPi mini. The Nissan Micra and Fiat Cinq are also pretty small units, but the Mpi one is without doubt, the best - a mate of mine was the first to use the MPi rad for cooling his vaux 16v mini....

Good Luck, but do yourself a favour and get a cossie cooler!!!

If I continue down my route of the turbo over the clutch housing, will I have room along the front of the engine bay for a 2wd cossie cooler? anyone thoughts?, thanks.

Background to the plan the whole point of moving the turbo to there (to the side of the engine) is I don't want to cut the bulkhead on my Mk1 Cooper (even though it's no concours)

Other plan

The rad could be changed for an mpi one and the turbo go in old rads position and an R5 cooler put where the alternator/oil filter are, these could be moved slightly (one more than the other).

I think I prefer the turbo over the clutch. but will I have room. I think all of the above makes sense!! *wink* I need to get the car and engine together and start mocking my idea up. Anyone any comments. Also does anyone have a pictures of a cossie cooler in a mini????

Thanks,

Mark. *wink*

here's a pic of the setup TurboDave mention's

I have fitted the metro fan but only useing 2 of the 4 stud's on the rad and 2 self tapper's *wink*
and I had to trim the end's of the fan blade's a touch as the caught on the starter motor *indifferent*
but I am changeing to the early non piggy back starter when I fit the engine back in to allow a tiny bit more clearance as I only have about 2mm otherwise *indifferent*

I will do some better pic's tommorow when I have the front off again *wink*
