I have paid way over the odds for the postage on everything I've had off ebay recently. My own fault for not checking the postage costs *oh well*

Does everyone make a killing on the postage on ebay?

I always check postage proir to bidding (i'm no expert, only bought 8 yhings). If the postage is too high I leave it.

Postage is, however, not just the posting costs. Things need packaging and this can cost a couple of quid.

But generally I think you are right, people make a killing on postage.

Yes I thought about packaging. I paid £12.50 for a box and some bubble wrap *oh well* (need an emoticon for mug lol)

Lesson learned, will check more carefully in future

I think you will find the reason is that people want to avoid ebay fees which are not charged on the postage only on the selling price.
When I buy from ebay I look at the overall cost and bid accordingly.
There are still bargains to be had if you work at it.

Yeah that's the reason really, plus it makes the item seem cheaper if you don't look at the postage price. You get the odd 99p buy it now with £180 postage sometimes!

Like danboy said you dont pay ebay fees on postage so a lot of people put high postage charges on to reduce there fees.

I personally work out the postage cost of any item i sell on there and dont over charge on postage, it can put people off bidding if its too high

If i see anyone bit postage even 50% over what it should be, I totally ignore the auction.
It's them who are missing out. I suggest you re-arrange your column selector in 'my ebay watched items' to include postage cost next to item cost.

i've sold a lot of stuff on ebay and try to cover all my external costs in the postage charge. This sometimes covers paypal fee's and auction fee's, if they are applicable, on top of the postage cost. However, this is never excessive as i usually have a stock of old packaging to reduce the cost there. I suppose it ends up being the same, but am always aware as a seller not to take the pish.

what does really anoy me though is folk who charge a fee to collect, infact the last time this happened i reported them to ebay and had the auction removed. It wouldnt be bad if it was a reasonable fee (cover a their listing fee etc as i did get the item cheap), but £15 to collect is totally unacceptable.

you're right though, people are taking the piss more and more for postage. Especially when you've paid £4 for postage on a SD memory card when its got £0.62p on the stamp and you know the wallet has only cost £0.25p from the local post office.

nother mug 'emotion' here please

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

I dont get why the hell it matters?? you are the one who chooses how much you pay for the item in total not the seller! if they want £1 OTT for the post then just bid £1 less!

Personaly when i work out postage i include the cost to me to post, the cost to package, the cost for me to drive to the PO and send it (yes it does cost in both time and fuel!) and i also add a bit to cover my ebay fees and paypal fees.

It might bump up the postage price by say 25% or something but it dosent mean i get any more money i just find it easyer to work out exactly how much i have 'made' from selling something.

I think it matters when you're one of those people who only charge postage. I don't add packaging, petrol, paypal fees or ebay fees.

And I think we are talking about people that charge £15 via Royal Mail for something that ends up with £2 something stamped on it. Its getting really daft now.
