As I'm going to have to make a custom manifold for my car (the Metty Turbo unit won't clear the rear bulkhead), I was wondering what people think about turning the turbo through 90 degrees and having the shaft axis along the centreline of the car rather than across the car.

There isn't anything behind the turbo in my car (apart from the rear wing) so the exhaust can run straight back from the turbo without any bends. My theory is that this will help reduce the back pressure the turbo sees which can only be a good thing. The air intake to the turbo will need to be slightly more convoluted, but with my (very) limited knowledge of turbo motors this would seem to be outweighed by the advantages on the exhaust side.

Any comments?

Mike

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

as long as you can get everything in and out then its fair enough.

just think though, you want the cold stuff to remain seperate from the hot stuff *smiley*

Back pressure difference will be minimal with the right exhaust anyway but every little helps.

The main thing is to keep all the compressed air as cool as possible, this would far outweigh any "back pressure" benefits you would see.

Turbo orientation or position is irrelavent, for instance:

What is important is that the oil feed and return are unrestriced and that the oil inlet and outlet on the turbo are in the vertical plane.

This book http://www.amazon.co.uk/Maximum-Boost-Turb...ie=UTF8&s=books will really help out with lots of turbo theory and installations. It's lacking in some places, but overall worth reading IMO.

What I'm more interested about Mike is what turbo you are planning to use?

Now thats more like it !!!!!!

As long as the oil goes into the top of the turbo, and out the bottom, any position is fine.

That white turbo looks like such a well thought out install.

Would be interested to know what the manifold looked like off the car :)

Anybody more info on that white car ??

It even looks like it has a proper sized turbocharger on it too, judging by the inlet pipe..

It's actually silver *wink*
What you wanna know ? It's owned by my best mate, Mike.
It was running a Switzer {sp ?} Turbo from a 6 cylinder diesel, which i believe is the one fitted in the pic.

You'll have to have a drive up and have a look, the engine will be coming out soon for a few mods. *smiley*

Performance for a start.....approximate size of the turbocharger ( in garrett terms if possible ?

And did he manage to squeeze it all together without chopping the bulkhead ?
I defo like the look of that setup.

As far as I remember its a garrett 4...I could be wrong though! A very tidy setup never the less. :)

It ran good times last year at Avon, must of been in the top 5?
