First of all lets find the reservoir...

Hmmm, can't find it...

Wait a minute..

Yes there it is!! Now all I need is the engine out to top it up! Think it's going to be a dealer job, don't want to go lift the engine cover myself. At least I think that's the brake reservoir.

i dont see it there. pull the plastic cover off the engine and have a proper look.

why do you need to top up the fluid? do your brake pads need changing instead?

According to the maual it's on the other side but that's left hand drive only. That's where the pedals are and that's the only fluid reservoir that's not accounted for. It's no big deal, I just thought I'd show it for a laugh. The fluid light is coming on but your right I'll check the pads, they should be OK though.

Why would it need a dealer to remove the engine cover and top it up ?

Oh it's not a dealership job, but I was just having a laugh at where the reservoir ended up. Youse guys must have seen this sort of thing before but I just thought it was far from the usual yellow caps and neon signs they put on most reservoirs in new cars. I will give it a crack on Saturday after I finish on the mini. Engine cover should be easy to get off but I hoped to not have to put a spanner near this car.

But seriously though, what would a member of the general public do if they needed to top up? I know quiet a few that wouldn't be able to do this. Just as well I have sockets and a crow bar in the tool kit then!

Oh yeah and it is a dealer job to replace the fog light bulbs and the xeon headlight bulbs apparently. Fog lights are a bumper off job. Took them 3 days to replace the alternator!

Yes got the alternator done under warranty (took 3 days!) and they left me a courtesy screwdriver in the engine bay! Perfect for taking the hub caps off the mini. I got heaps of syringes at work, good for cc'ing heads etc. It's obvious they decided to sell this car for the RHD market at the last minute.

Just done the discs, pads and flexi hoses on my 172, once you get the engine cover off there is enough room to get a 500ml brake fluid container down the back of the engine to fill it up.
As for having to take the inlet manifold off to do the plugs!!!!!!! good old Renault

Strictly speaking, brake fluid isnt an item a member of the general public needs to worry about though..Although most items on any french car are something to be worried about I geuss.

If the fluids low....its generally because the pads are worn. Some numptys do top it up, then when new pads are fitted, there is too much fluid in the reservoir.

Dealers arent always too bright either, but having the general public work at their cars too, can be a dangerous thing. Made about 6000 times worse by internet mechanics dishing out advice, when many themselves dont know which end of a hammer to use when carrying out service work etc

Yeah they are a good car and I've had very few problems with it since its 6 years old which I've had it for four. Induction noise is good with the windows down:)

Haha, it gets better! I guess I'm not used to new cars, the Mini was my first and only car until this one.

Yep pads will be checked first but was just fascinated by how much you have to dismantle the engine to get to various bits.

Oh oh induction noise? Haven't heard that yet. Have you seen the exhaust manifold on it? 4-2-1 with BIG primaries! Yes best car to drive- it only weighs 1035 kg and has automatic xeons and wipers, full electrics, leather seats, ESP and good MPG. The best bit is this though...

I have one of these things. It’s easy for a start take the top cover off and put it somewhere safe, and leave it off until you sell the car. They are pointless and they offer no protection anyway. And they rattle...!

4 torx screws hold it on and that’s it.

Also another top tip is to remove induction valve which is located under the offside arch were the horn is. Removing it is simple and it improves breathing and stops the car sucking air from off the floor.

Which is not good when you go through the odd puddle or flood.

Any other probs let me know I seemed to have nearly replaced everything on mine and it’s only done. 34k. with one lady owner.

I drill holes in everything..!
