Hi all,

Just been out to the mini as i had some enthusiasm for the first time in 2 months since i parked it up for the winter.

Before i parked it in the garage it wasn't running very well if i let it idle for more than 5 minutes when i went to drive away it would splutter and cut out and then take ages to re-start, when eventually it did re-start it would splutter and belch out black smoke, well it did it again today the exhaust fumes also smell very petroly.

Could it be overfuelling? I've changed the plugs and the coil and checked all the fuel lines!

Any ideas? Maybe a trip to the rolling road?

Thanks matt

well if every thing was ok when it was left and its been standing i'd hazard a guess at the float valve leting fuel past.

It was doing it before i put it in the garage but it has seemed to of got worse.

Is it a carb off job to sort the float valve?

yes, with the carb off

undo the 4 screws on the bottom of the carb and remove the plate, then you can see the float and valve, the float is held in with 1 long screw from the outside of the carb on the side,

give it a good clean out and check the float hight is set as per the haynes manual.

something else you could check is something i had a prob with , the diaphragm in the pressure regulator became porous, so check your fuel pressure at tickover and check theres no fuel above the diaphragm.

both good sugestions there, and both easier than pulling the carb.

to lean the mixture

you turn the screw anticlockwise, OUT!

Well i went out to the mini again to see if i could find out why she is overfueling.

I looked in the haynes manual to see how to change the mixture and it shows the mixture adjusting screw at the back of the carb against the bulkhead! How do i get to this?

I checked the fuel pressure and when i adjust it fuel comes out of the stud on top of the fuel regulator could this be part of the problem?

I ran the engine with the fuel cap off to see how the return fuel was flowing and it is a steady flow.

The only other thing i can see that could be a problem is that when i turn the ignition off it still shows 1-2psi on the fuel pressure gauge i'm wondering if my fuel gauge is out and my fuel pressure is too high?

Sorry for all my questions just trying to get to the bottom of this.

Cheers Matt

Check to see if the fuel pressure reg is leaking internally ...

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Worth a check@

Wip off the dashpot and then turn on the fuel pump or ignition. Look at the jet if you see no fuel escaping from the jet then this will elimate it flooding at idle. However if you see a small trickle like I discovered on mine then the carb is flooding. In my case the fuel pressure was set too high, forcing the needle valve open. If this is the case its either a worn or dirty float needle valve or fuel pressure setting / regulator fault. Hope this helps

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

fuel coming out the FPR adjusting screw means its goosed.

There should only be air on the top, fuel underneath IIRC.

Means fuel could be going in the wrong place. best way to check is to take off the FPR to plenum hose and see if fuel comes out of there. if it does is goosed!!!

*smiley*
