right chaps i took my block to the machine shop & the chap has had a look & says the deck needs a very minimal skim, a kiss was hs words! hmm strange!

anyway the real prob for me is as follows:

the man said to me......there is a small lip on the top of the bore (the part where the piston does'nt reach when at the top of its stroke) his 1st reaction to me was to just hone the bores & new rings or if needed new standard size pistons & rings

then i mentioned new pistons (i had minispares megapistons in my head) he said then, i have 2 options, he measured the bore with the correct tool too!

1. said due to the piston not coming to the deck face of the block on the standard stroke crank i could probobly get away with just re-honing the bores, he said on measuring them that its a situ of there is a small lip at the top but upon honing it'll take any edge off the lip, i must add that in the bore where the piston runs you can still make out the original honing crosshatching on the bores too!

2.if i was going to get new pstons & rings i have the option of going up a size which means you know the bore is like new & as are the pistons

what way should i go? i'm really not sure!
if i could get way with honing & new rings then the money saved would go into anther modification in the engine build

if i re-bore obviously new pistons & rings are pricey but there is still a gain, sorry if i've doubled what i've said, i'm shattard

cheers chaps

Have you prices up a set of rings compared to a set of new pistons? A set of megapistons is not silly money. I think for peace of mind I would got for a +20 rebore and a set of megas. This way you know it will last.

thats one of main thoughts for this engine build its just that i was suprised that the chaps 1st thought was it only needs a re-hone, it really is'nt in bad condition & the lip is'nt much, i'm sort of convincing myself to re-hone & at most fit new pistons

& i really was suprised to be honest at piston & ring price as i thought the rings came with the pistons but they dont they are seperate,

i'm going to see what your opinions are today guys & have another chat with the guy in a lil while & think over what way to go cause i'm not sure at all

if your going for new pistons a rebore is virtullay nothing extra!!

Either do half a job and re-ring and hone the bore as little as possible.

or

Do a full job and go +20 thou!

Do a proper job, dont do half a job. Its better in the long run.

Are the existing pistons up to the job?

Standard 998 slipper pistons are not that strong. The earlier ones are better, but may not withstand the turbo if they have had hard life already.

Do it properly and re-bore is my advice.
