Bit OT but I am currently trying to get my lathe operational (it's an old Globe with 3.5" throw or so) but to do so I need to completely rewire it. I've been looking for a latching on/off switch for it for ages but can't seem to find one, and was wondering if any of you guys had an idea? I live in Bristol btw.

Hmmmm... not exactly what I'm after! I don't want to have to fit a relay or anything. Just need a simple on/off switch like you see on most lathes sold by machine mart etc. Only place I can get one I found is machine mart spares! And they charge over the odds... Have just spent the last hour or so looking at it... can't seem to find exactly what I want and since my knowledge of such items is minimal it's a wee bit difficult! There is no sense crying over every mistake- you just keep on trying til you run out of cake. |

As far as I can understand it's a spdt start/stop push button switch. I've got it pictured in me head, we used to use them all the time in the workshops. Heres a pic... On/off switch on this. There's an RS in St Philips, might be worth calling in and talking to them if you're not entirely sure what you're after.

idealy you should include a reversing switch if possible, damn handy! On 28th Aug, 2011 Kean said:

That is assuming that the motor will run in reverse. http://www.twin-turbo.co.uk

isnt it called a no volt release switch? where if the power goes of and comes back on, the machine won't switch on again.

You REALLY need a NVRS or else you will, at some point, no matter how careful you are, have an accident. It might be horrible, you might get lucky but one thing is for certain ... it'll scare last nights dinner out of you!!!! Something like RS stock number 398-5178 will be the easiest for you to impliment. A question you need to ask yourself, as others have mentioned, is do you want to be able to reverse the motor? All simple AC motor instalations can be reversed. If you don't have reverse on the lathe's gearbox (as my machine doesn't) then it is VERY useful to have on the machine. Every day is a school day ...........

my grandpa had an old xl lathe that i used a few times. it was turned on by a light switch that was above the wall mounted motor, behind the flat belts it was driven by. that thing was f-ing scary to turn on!
