What engine type was in the 1275 MG midget? Was it the a series? Curious as the top looks a series but the sump is not cast ally.

yes, A series.

the mini (Transverse mounted with gearbox under engine) has a cast ally sump as it is actually the gearbox, on the midget the gearbox i mounted on the rear of the engine allowing a cheaper pressed steel sump.

Reckon a rwd for a mini is possible then without having to worry about gear box troubles? Dont want a rwd mini really but then again dont want to be replacing gearbox every other day :)

Is there any hybrid gearbox that can fit to a mini engine in a fwd scenario?

No. But don't believe all you read. The mini gearbox when built properly with good quality parts is no where near as bad as people will have you think.

I second that. I have personally know 140-160BHP engines sitting on top of a well build "standard" Mini box. The quality of the bearings and quality of the build is important ... as is a good layshaft spec.
The diff is a no-no though, get a 4 pin diff or you will brake the standard one on a weekly basis!!

Obviously the more torque you put through it and the more agressive you are with it the faster it will deteriorate.

There is a guy near me that regularly kills gearboxes in a 998 Mini but I am sure I could get reasonable millage out of the same box.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

At the end of the day, it is only your feet that breaks gearboxes :)
