Well, instead of the paper gaskets i got "recomended" to use universal blue to stick my diff back together, but its not done the job even though i followed instructions. Its leaking from the end plates, the two plates that bolt on either side that the metal pot things go into.

Can i take them off without taking the engine out?

What do you all use do you just use paper gaskets? is there some better gasket paste i should be using instead?

stowmaket suffolk

you need the gaskets as this will effect the diff preload.

a + box needs 1 thou preload using thrust bearings if you remove the gaskets there are 11 thou-ish each so buy removing them you will now have 24thou preload or a big gap thats why it leaked, also change the little o ring whne the plunger sits as well as these go hard and cause leaks, but some times they will allways leak to a certain degree

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

Are you sure that it is not the oil seals on the output shaft/pot joint leaking? These can be changed easily, although you're working on your back.

If it's leaking there I might guess that there's too much shinms in there. There's no reason why it should leak if not.

Is it possible to check the preload with the engine in the car?

I switched my diff, but but the same ammount of shims in there was one on one side and two on the other side, i was told to do that if i was using the same casing!

maybe them and a combination of the thicker universal blue is why it leaked.

i always learn the hard way!

no its not the o ring seals they are new, you can see where its dripping from when the engines hot :(

That blue hylomar stuff is SHITE!

This is the reason for leaks! Place the tube in the bin and promise never to buy it again!

Tom,
Agree totally, blue hylomar was the thing in the 60's.
As you said earlier, Wellseal is what's needed.

Well, it depends. If you're using bolts or studs on the diff housing. I definately prefer studs there, so it's a "nogoer" for me.
