leeds/wakefield.

has been slain, i am no longer afraid to venture into the depths of pandoras box, i know what lays therein from this day forth.
from now on its no more mr Gearbox repair man armed with airgun and stripped threads ,
but ,

from now on i'm doing them myself,.

i have just spent a couple of hours in the company of a Mr Richard bates,[JC BATES, brighouse "rover"] and he showed me how to dismantle and rebuild my gearbox, he a top bloke and an extreamly friendly and helpfull fella, and a real mini enthusiast.the kind of person i will make time for in the future .

getting the olsd salisbry diff into the box is another story mind, lol.
iv'e had a good day all said, box is complete and just waiting to go on the engine,,

now for beer,

carl

Gearboxes are something I rarely delve into.

Although I did build my Mini box ( several times )

They arent as daunting as they first appear. Once you have one stripped for the first time, you do realise they arent that bad after all !!!

You surprise me Carl, I thought you of all people would have been doing your own boxes a long time ago, but there you go, they arent hard now you know.
Paul

I seriously doubt it!

I'll definately be seeking advice before I try stripping and rebuilding a gearbox again, my first attempt 2 years ago resulted in its catapluting across the garage and breaking a corner off the casing!*laughing*

have you ever taken one to pieces dave,i certainly wouldnt try altering the preload as the amount to remove if loosening would be in thous, [this i know as ive altered preload on the shimmed up lincoln diff in the past, and it dosn't take much.

as it happens the last time i measured it was 3 or so years back and it came in at circa 70lbs.

Stevie, this is a JK dog box so no silly balls and springs ,. a lot less to go wrong but the same in principle.

Paul, iv'e never bothered with them in the past because my gearbox man only charged £50 a go to freshen up,so was not worth learning for that kind of money, but now i'm sick of stripped threads ,plus they broke an lsd crown wheel trying to force it over the quaife diff last time one was in there, they are great lads and all that but they just insist on the windy gun and its just too rough ,iv'e helicoiled every thread on both side covers on one box alone ,
