Heres my first attempt at a turbo conversion, with an RS intercooler, all fitted into a round nose Mini. Its off on the rollers on Thursday so fingers crossed for some good results. Thankyou to everybody on Turbominis for helping me achieve this one way or another. Eventually I intend to replace the intercooler pipes with some nice sweeping alloy ones when funds permit it!

Since taking the pics above I have managed to squeeze in the air horns & compressor in front of the washer bottle. Incase your wondering why there's a hole in the inner wing - the front end comes off in one piece, not a flip front but a removable front end, recommended by the way!

Hi Jimmy. On and off I started back in November, but inherited a spate of bad luck with the bottom end, which post poned the lot really. The conversion itself suprisingly did not take long, however sourcing and working out how to fit the intercooler did! Its amazing what can be done with a few hurs a week in the garage after work

Well heres the power output, however the boost pressure is unclear. In theory the bleed valve was fully shut so the standard metty actuator is 4psi? So assume the boost to be 4psi ish - my damn TIM gauge is miles out according to the tuner

what was the gauge reading?

It's possible that either someone has messed with the actuator or that you have a slight vac leak.

Very nice looking car btw. Did you fabricate all the cooler pipes yourself?

In the garage......again!!

thats real nice, are you happy with the results, whats the spec?

133.5 bhp 123 lb torque 116mph @6640rpm 9.5psi
Shakespear RWYB 14.995 91.83mph

Hi there, glad you like the car Ric - aye made the pipes myself, using "lobster" bends LOL, cut a V out of the pipe deburr the cut, then fold and weld, get a nice sweeping bend - on the cheap!

As for the psi well its a bit confusing, as my TIM gauge read about 0.4 bar (6psi) but the tuners gauge read about 11psi (at the same time 2 boost gauges connected) before we did the run during setting up the mixture. When we did the final run the bleed valve was fully screwed shut (so in theory its 4psi boost), and my TIM gauge didnt even reach 0.2bar, yet the tuners boost gauge still read 10psi?? I tested the actuator when it was on the bench and it appeared to be operating around 4psi ish

So we left it that as we didnt want to go mad with the psi so we did the final run with after the carb needle had been modified at the top end. I ain't convinced the tuners gauge was right as driving home the Mini was hardly boosting its off on another rolling road in march this time for just a power run in a shoot out, so it will be intresting to see what power it will produce when correctly set at 8 psi.

Engine Spec:
1275 Mg Metro turbo Block and pistons
N/A Mg Metro cam (731 ish)
Lightweight steel adjustable duplex timing gear
Minispares MS03 Roadrocket Stage3 head, with stainless valves and bronze guides, with chambers CC increased to 29cc
Standard A rockers
Late Metty Trubo Dizzy totally standard with vac advance connected (for a change)
Standard Gearbox with 2.7:1 final drive
RS Turbo intercooler running 45mm dia pipes
Plugs NGK BPR6ES
Avonbar green air filter
Bailey piston dump valve (just fitted)
Turbo Oil Cooler
Mini Spares 2 core Rad with Aux elec fan
Bleed valve aiming for about 6-8psi for reliability from gearbox
T3 Turbo
RC40 Twin box exhaust

Before the rolling road the carb had the standard needle, and fueling was dangerously weak, pleased the fuel ratio is right now accross the revs, as for the results yeah I am pleased, 100BHP at 5000rpm from a 1275 - thats great no need to slog its arse off anymore with lump N/A cams!

well done, good results for a first turbo conversion. As you say its great not needing lumpy cams and to rev the guts out of it to get the power, much better road manners.

0.27bar is approx 4psi.

Sounds to me like your tunner needs a new gauge!!!!

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

hi dean 4psi is weedy!!

get a correct gauge dean

minispares 0 to 30 psi 52mm bezel

dont boost more than 10 psi or the clutch wont do the duty, if its a vertro *frown*

remember the other 2 mods i told you about *wink* and one other thing dean

the LARGE bottle neck twin RC 40 will rob power above 110 bhp

after the other mods i told you about have been implimented *wink*

any way well done fella i bet you will never go back to N/A again *happy*

Absolutely .... Play Mini stuff is great quality and I have never seen a car where the system is obviously limiting performance ..... sound the dogs too!!!

josh i ran a 2" single maniflow back box and it strangled my performance
big time

it was ok until 120 bhp then it robbed loads of power

it was quickley changed
to my taliban rocket launcher
straight through system

Fantastic mate LOL - hey what great Gents you are thankyou for your positive comments. I should have done this over a decade ago - good bye N/A!

Benross - Your a legend - thanks for all the help mate and everybody else to for the continued support and constructive advice. I do like the sound of the 2inch play Mini system with the up sweept flared Exit. Nicceeee! But the taliban rocket launcher system sounds the dogs LOL!

josh i will look buddy ??

the back box was made by MANIFLOW

I designed it 2" inet to 2.5" internal to 3" barryboy exit

cost me 85 pounds around 6 years ago

dean do the other mods as advised buddy

one other thing

on the plenum there is a OEM dump valve iff you look dean

this needs pluging, the hole size is correct to run a 3/8" BSP tap down and fit a hex plug in *wink*

this usually lifts off its seat around 10 psi of boost

may be a shade less if the spring weak, you will not be able to boost further than this figure untill the mod has been carried out
