i have my mini lowered! probobly a lil more than i should for the road but i'm fiddling with the height & fitting new suspension parts etc

anyhow, i've been told by some experianced mini owners & advised in 2 mini related shops that its up to me if i use

'Lowered Front Shock Mounts'

& the reason why they'd be used a bit vague, now i was thinking about it, not to much as my brain is'nt the greatest *happy*

lowered mounts dont affect the height so i thought there main purpose must be for increased DROOP in the front dampers to maintain the contact patch of the tyres, as the front is the driven wheels this is where its needed most when driving a mini towards its limits, correct me if i'm heading to mars in my thought chaps, ust somat that crossed my mind today *happy*

i feel i must say that i mentioned scruffy as there seems to be alot of talk that your a suspensions setup top man! i may be needing you help by the summer :)

i think you might find you will have more traval, as in if you go over a bump quick you wont be air born as soon?
in another way of explanining it, you would need to jack the car up higher to get the wheel in the air.

thats the only thing i can see with having lowerd brackets.

arrh this is what i'm on about, i've never looked at a pair to compair the differances so from that i dont know what they are for

are they? the damper pin higher up to avoid bottoming out as you say carl

or

is the top pin lower? to allow more droop

cheers all, its something i need to clear up for me anyhow & probobly solve a few issues for other, i'm just a lad that likes to know what the benfit of a part is rather than fitting it cause its the 'new' product out or what ever, & at the end of the dayif you know what its doing properly you can exploit it to its potential, thats my 2pence worth anyhow *happy*

The top pin is higher, and also a bit closer to the inner wing to straighten the dampers angle compared to the upper arm. Ie, more efficient.
Lool at Miglias, they've taken this to the extreme.

Here, the damper pin in the upper mounts is situated ON the inner wing.

Mine were std just cut in half moved up and rewelded. As a guide on how low to go if your driveshafts are anything more than parallel (90 degrees to the joint) you must have more money than sense as they won't last long!

That's interesting Scruffy. I don't really understand it though.

From the factory, the driveshafts are far from straight. When you lower the car, the angle of the driveshaft will improve until you pass the horizontal. Eventually you will end up back at the standard angle, but -ve rather than +ve if you see what I mean.

Incidentally, on my road car (8 to 10,000 miles per year) the top arme pretty much sit on the bumpstops. Driveshaft angle is hard to tell; just beyond horizontal I reckon.

My hillclimber, on the other hand is MUCH lower, the bottom arms are horizontal at rest and driveshaft angle is horrendus. Only broken one pot joint in 5 years. Miglias run this sort of level I think.

Another reason for moving the mount up is that it moves the piston in the damper more into the middle of the damper. The damper will perform better if the pistion is more in the middle/ I guess because it will have more fluid to play with than if it is stuck at one end all the time.
