Adding to my miserable failure to post pictures,I've failed to get my avatar up as anything but a red cross.Is there something I should know?

Yes, three things

1) You do not need [img] tags in the avatar url - it wasnts the URL of the picture, not the BB Code.

2) You were trying to use a webpage as an avatar url, not an image url. That'd also fail.

And as a note,

3) The image you were trying to use is way too big to be an avatar - they should be 60x60 pixels, not a proper full size image. :) I can make you a little version of that pic (http://www.turbominis.co.uk/index.php?p=20&id=3169) if you like
