The passenger side wheel bearing appears to be making a slight rumbling noise, which I know is a sign the wheel bearing is not right.

Hwever there is virtually no side to sidemovement, and I am wondering if water has got into the bearing and has caused it too wear, I will try to get in there now with the grease.

Anyone got any other thoughts as to what could be causing it? I have also just greased all the suspension conponents to make sure its not them.

Also is torque wrench required to re-tighten the hub bolt as I lent mine to a friend because I thought It wouldn't needed for a while!

Thanks.

could it be a cv joint? Does it rumble more or less when you round bends?

hope this helps.

Right ive just thrown it into a roundabout and the noise does not change, however having heard it again it sounds more like a dull whine rather then a rumble, however rumbles with the front of the car jacked up when I spin it.

I have had this ...... ultimately the only reason I found it was when I had a bearing failure on the North Circular Road in London at rush hour!!!

I am fairly certain you will find the bearing cage has started to break up. Once the cage cracks it's got a little while to live as the tension in the races hold it all together of a fashion. Wear will soon kick in and some slack will develop and just when it's least convenient the race will cage will fail and that's it. I was unlucky in that the outer race failed and the whole thing collapse in about half a rev! If the inner fails it will at least get you off the road but not before you've had a fright!!

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Thanks for that, i'll get that fixed asap. the noise has got considerably worse in 50 miles, better stop driving it and fix it.

bugger it! It was only likely to cover 500 miles before it gets completly stripped and rebuilt anyway, oh well thats life!

sounds like a bearing. is the bearing tight? if so try packing it with grease first as iv changed rumbling bearings that have just turned out to be unworn and dry, ie, no grease left in them

Always check the CV, driv flange, and hub for wear (from a spinning outer race) before fitting the new parts. Otherwise you'll be doing it again after a short time. :)
