Picked up what I thought was a 998 cheap from scrappies on friday and just realised that the bores look to big for a 998. Is there any obvious difference on the block outer casing? someone said something about 2 extra plugs on a+ 1275? casing?

The engine number is 99h but its probs just been changed for insurance i bet.

If its a 1275 then ill be well happy! just wanted it to pull apart really but if its a 1275 ill be more careful!

Most obvious difference is that the 998 has only one core plug at the end of the block above the clutch housing, whereas the 1275 has two.

Also, the 998 has tappet covers on the back of the block and the 1275s are solid.

The other difference for the later engines is that when they leave the factory the 998s are yellow and the 1275s are red, but then someone may have painted it since.

A 998 has removable covers on the back under the ports,a 1275 don't unless it's a 1960's cooper
