if you run it in between the carb and regulator you will still see over 10psi of fuel pressure if running more then 7psi of boost, the only place there is very little pressure is in between the tank and pump

Yep most use them between tank and pump, better for pump too to filter before it.

All very true but make sure you check it regularly .... if it blocks you may end up really lean on a full power run and then you'll be catching the bus .... probably to the piston suppliers!!

In the past I have used the fuel filter from a Golf GTi, easy enough to fit under the bonnet and very cheap from the likes of german and swedish.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Unless the filter is quite large and specifically designed to be run in front of an efi pump, I would NOT use it before the pump.

It will starve the pump causing cavitation which will cause pump and running problems.

EFI pumps must have a good unrestricted fuel supply. So that will mean a big free flowing filter.

If its after the pump, whilst it still needs to flow well, it isnt as important, because the pump will be able to pump through it just fine.

Although I'd like to have a filter in front of my fuel pump I couldn't find any that looked as if they'd flow enough to go on the suction side of the pump, so I use a filter from a VW Polo between reg and carb, it is ideal as it has the right size tails and is a metal cased filter.

search ebay for some Porsche fitment filters.

They are pretty big and can be used in front of the pump. Big metal cannister type of thing, not that expensive.

Maybe its just me. But I would not out a filter with an 8mm OD hosetail in front of an efi pump that has a larger hosetail.

That filter would be ideal after the pump though.

I have said this before, how do you fit a pre filter to an intank pump?

Not being funny by the way*wink*

Most if not all in-tank pumps will have a bag/gauze filter already attached to them, or one that can be attached.

Very true.

IMHO pre filters are not such a clever idea that they first appear to be. That goes for the oil as well.

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

Well having had a brand new pump seize on me due to shite getting in it i run a pre-filter.

Its got 10mm tails, is see through and rebuildable and was about £10 from demon thieves i think.

All Facet's run a pre filter and they're used on some high output engines that i dont hear of having any problems due to it?

*smiley*

Facet pumps pump a miniscule amount of fuel compared to an efi pump though, and many would be used in a dead end system, instead of a return style.

I broke a pump once due to lack of pre-filter. I then added a steel bodied inline filter with 10mm hosetails between tank and pump. I had no end of trouble with it. I was surprised, as it was what I thought a reasonable size, at about 1.25" diamater and some 3" long. Which for most inline filters at the time seemed big.
The pump made all sorts of noises, and under load, the car always had running problems, related to lack of fuel.

eventually I re-worked the tank to accept a 12mm steel pipe, with a metal gauze on the end as a prefilter ( froma cavalier SRI pickup actually ) and dumped the 10mm inline filter. All problems were solved, and the pump was nice and quiet again.

For reference, I currently use an Aeromotive fuel filter with a 100mic stainless element before my 2x044 pumps on the granada. That filter seems to work fine.
I would have used 2, but my tank was made with only 1 outlet.....lack of forethought when I had the tank made.
