Right, I think that this is going to drive me crazy.

I have got a missfire, which I can't seem to get sorted. But I have also got another noise that I thought may have been detonation.
See this thread for the history
http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=134671

I am now running the car with an intercooler, but I still have the noise. It only occurs when at low revs and lots of throttle. It's like a cracking noise.

I am booked in to see Ray at T&M next wednesday but I now fear that it's somthing else (the gearbox or the drop gears maybe?!?)

Sorry for bringing this back up, but I really need to get it sorted otherwise I am going to rip the whole lot out (burn it!!!) and start again!

to be honest its very hard to say wht it is from a description, i think most things have been covered in your other thread. if the noise is this apparent it should only take a rolling road operator to suss out a problem area.

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

a cracking noise sounds like a spark jumping off a lead , try closing up the plug gaps to 25 thou as a quick test of this . the other thing you could try is richen the engine up a turn ,so its too rich ,then drive it and see if it makes a diff .

I have tried to richen it up and it makes no difference.

The noise sounds more mechanical than the noise that a spark would make.

Not really, Its more like a cracking from the bottom of the engine on the radiator side (passenger side).

Timing chain tensioner sounds probable. It's coming from that side.

Steve, I bet you are as fed up with this as I am. You have been on it from the start!

If I but a new duplex timing kit would it include the tensioner? or should I just buy it on it's own?

Could this also be the cause of the missfire?
If so, I had better stop driving it!

id expect a faulty timing chain tensioner to be noisey all the time not just under load. duplex kit wouldnt include a tensioner i dont think as a lot of people dont use a tensioner with one. i think i do, cant remember tho lol

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.
