I am using one, I like it, and have gotten use to it, so when the first one where worn after 4000 km's of use I went and bought a new one.... In other words, they feel good but are lousy quality...at least the ones from minispares.

First mini turbo to get in the 12's & site perv

Herefordshire

i looked into getting one, but its something like 2.2 turns lock to lock, compared to 2.7

i thought that half a turn isnt much and decided against it

you can definitely feel it, I had two minis for a while now, one with and one without, and I personally preferred the quick racked car.

mmm rack quality has gone downhill evidently,

i fitted a new recon one a year or so ago and it never felt right from the off.

Titam motorsport are/will be doing a rebuild kit that can be fitted without removing the rack!? with Keith Calver, looks promising.

you've had it ages... thats probably why its fine!!

on my mk1 i binned the original rack and put a new recon one on, the new one was worse!!

the quality of the recon racks sems to have got worse in the last 3 or so years.

yes, but the LHD quick racks as supposed to be NEW, not recon, but still the quality is crap...I have heard others over on the minimania board with similar problems.

surely wear on racks is down to mileage not age? The one on my 62van is still perfect, but i couldnt tell you if its been replaced in the fist 15years of its life.

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

Good point, mine must have done about 100k miles then. Can you tap it for a grease nipple or is that just silly?

most have a removable plug, pull the bung out where the steering column would be on a LHD car and you should see it if it has one.

you can take that out and stuff a bit of ep90 in.

Oh right I didn't know that. I thought they were all pretty well sealed. Might give that a go next time I'm under the car.

Jay, not under the car, from inside!! On the passenger side bulkhead there is a grommet which covers a plastic allen bolt. remove that and you can top the rack up. The main reason for the plastic alen bolt to be there though is that once removed you can put a drill bit (1/4" I think) in to the rack to hold it central as you build up the steering assembly.

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

My personal opinion on quick racks are;

track / competition car ..yes ... definately

road car .. no

My reasoning is that the steering on Mini is both direct and heavy as standard. Fitting a quick rack can actually make a road car more difficult to drive smoothly for the 99.9% of the time your not actually in need of it, especially when parking etc.

I'd not have a competition car without one though as I tend to set the back end up somewhat loose.

I agree with you to a degree there Rog! But it isnt really much worse to park with either.

I feel that also the use of an LSD diff will break racks, as it puts some force on the car when you are turning sharp.

Again, a reason I won't use LSD's on a road car. That and the fact that on UK roads they tend to promote tramlining and the like due to the grooves the trucks create and the fact that damage to the surface has to get so bad people disappear down them before anything is done!

As for not being bad to park I know at least 1 person who couldn't even turn the wheel on my last car with a quickrack on (175/50/13's, 300mm steering wheel) .... she almost ripped the column out trying!!! As the driving tuition in this country is a joke and most people learn in modern cars with super light power steering people don't learn to spin the wheel whilst the car is moving.
Also as 99% of road users, around where I live at least, are inconsiderate cnuts you often find you get back to the car to find 2" infront and 2" behind!!!

indeed..

one good reason not to have arcch extentions... the you can just grab the rear arch and bump the back round.
