Use a flat headed screwdriver to bend the split pin back a bit and some playing around with the pliers to get them in the right place, then just pinch the split pin and pull it out.

some people use a suitably sized R pin for these, i found using one of those tiny magnets on the end of an extendable pen handy for putting the split pin back in... "Turbo's make torque, and torque makes fun"

If your stripping the car out and removing the pedal pox it's often easier to remove the central pivot so the pedals are free and then remove the master cylinder from the studs. You can then get to the split pins from above by pulling the master cylindes up until the pedal hits the bulkhead .... very easy. Every day is a school day ...........

I had an R clip in my clutch pedal setup and it popped out during a long journey. thankfully the pedal went floppy on the motorway so was no hastle to drift into a services and sort it, woulda beena nightmare if it hapened in a city. i use split pins now, PITA but you know they aint comeing loose turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)

I did mine last night. The speing on the pedal makes it difficult to push the pin out, so just apply a little pressure and the pin will come lose and push out.

Just to clarify what Ben said. The return spring on the pedal tends to keep the pin in place.
