After blowing my head gasket in an embarrassing fashion (I flooded it and then tried the start it with the timing 180 degrees out) I am not able to get the head off.

As well as removing the cylinder head nuts, I've also removed all the studs bar the middle one at the front, as I can't shift the begger (could this be the cause of the problem?) If I take a raw hide mallet to the head I can rotate the head around the stud with out a problem but I can't get the head off the block. Currently I've connected the engine hoist to the head and lifted the whole lot off the ground in the hope that the car will drop away, a bit drastic but I'm well and truely stuck.

I feel like a bit off a Muppet, especially as it's something I normally do in my sleep. So does any one have any ideas?

Yup its the middle stud, this has a closer tolerance and thus often seizes up.

Get some penetrant fluid soaked in there for a bit and try again.

twisting and swearing helps loads too.

LOL at shaneyboy .......

Right this is drastic but WILL work .....

First find a fire extinguisher....

Next drop some petrol around the stud and let it soak down for a minute or so then add some more.

Can you see where this is going?????

Yup, set fire to the petrol

Mop up the majority of the spilt petrol and then set fire to it.

As the petrol burns off down the stud the head will loosen and you can lift it off.

Best done outside and try not to burn yourself.

Rog

P.S. For future reference the correct combination of swear works is ....

If you don't F strart to behave your F going to the B scrap yard you hunk of C junk .... works every time *wink*

P.P.S. Yes, my answer to every seizure probelm is to cover it in petrol and set fir to it .....

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

in true blue peter style, "make sure you have adult supervision!!"
That requires a bit of bravery doesnt it Roger? how effective is it?
I usally use superslacks penitrating fluid, dont think i have the balls to light petrol on my car, seen an astra go up in flames 10ft away from me when i was tinkering in the garage and the chap oppesite was welding up his car, hit the fuel line, Scary!!!

Is there any reason why this hole is slightly smaller than the rest? Having measured the other heads I've got in the workshop it appears that the middle hole is about 9.5mm whilst the rest are 10.5mm. Would it be worth taking it out to 10.5mm when I've got the head off or is it smaller for a reason (all I can think of is to more accurately align the head)

I tried that, using various degrees of force until I started to bend the jaws on the open spanner that I was using to hold the lower nut.

Looks like I'm going to have to torch my car tomorrow.

Good point Brain.

Rob, is the head moving around the stud or is the stud turning with the head? Give me a call tomorrow if you get stuck.....

The head is moving around the stud. Also it's getting a lot easier to rotate, I can now move it with my bear hands as opposed to hitting it with a raw hide mallet, so I think I'm making progress, just very slowly.

Rob ... you have a corrosion problem as I thought.

Get the heat on it (burning petrol) and it'll come off no problem! Make sure you clean up both the stud and the hole for it. Don't open up the central stud hole as it really is the only location the head really has, the rest is referenced off that stud.

Now the head is moving on the stud can you still not be removed?

I normally try to find the point where you can get the two nuts aligned when tight and then undo it with socket and T-bar. if that doesn't get it out then it's a stud extractor tool...
when you get the head off that is.

Copper slip my friend ..... *wink*

It worked. I have to remove the engine mounts and lift the engine with as trolley jack so the head would clear the slam panel, but it's now off! Looks like I'm going to have to take it down the machine shop on Monday to get the stud out, but at least the head is off.
