Mk1 grill mustache rubbing paint!

I noticed when I took my grill off that it had managed to rub through the paint, where the mustache comes into contact with the body.

Do most people fit something in between the grilll and body to avoid it rubbing?

Ive heard that clear self-adhesive film is supposed to be good be quite expensive, has anyone tried using it?
