I was on the worlds largest container ship a couple of weeks back and was gagging to just take a peek in the engine room, it really is an amazing sight when they leave the hatch open. I did however find an old exhaust valve on a vessel about half the size and it was about 5ft tall!!!

T3Tone: Wich was it?? Emma Mearsk or Estelle?? I have had start-up on the separators on Estelle and the newest one (cant remember the name). All of them got a 14 cylinder Sulzer with 110000 bhp. And the fuelseparators (2) separates 17 m3/h each of heavy fuel :)

It was the emma mearsk the second time that she docked, think the estelle has had one visit. They really are incredible pieces of engineering, took ages to walk to the bow from the bridge and thats placed quite near the centre of it!
Your job sounds a bit more interesting than mine, we have to climb onto the gantries and drop the required lashing, witch is alot as there 22 containers wide.

I did my part of my apprenticeship on large deisel engines, although they were only up to 7500hp, 300/370mm stroke.

I spent the summer of 76 in the test bay where they were developing systems to handle heavy fuel. It was so thick it would not come out of the container if you turned it upside down.

Greatest thrill of all was starting one up. Two handles, one for fuel, one for starting air. You actually stood on it to start it - great feeling of power.

Keeping that sort of environment clean and crap free must be a nightmare, considering how meticulous everyone on this site is about building engines. Well just anyone building engines proporly anyway!
