During my engine rebuild I had just mounted the gearbox and I spun the crank to check all was well, it wasn't despite doing a dry fit. After I torqued it down I was just hitting something Grrrr..I thought, the central pickup.. and then it cleared.

When I split it again I realised that it could not be the pickup so I kept scratching my head and eventually realised that it was a bigend bolt JUST tapping a camshaft lobe... Because I had not installed the timing chain yet the cam was in wierd positions and it could hit

So if you feel a slight restriction, spin the cam.....

this is why you have to use S rods or short stroke or similar when you build a 8 port engine with push rods:)

Is that because the cam timing is so different that the lobes interfere??

Exhaust and inlet that is. That means some cam lobes are in a totally different place.

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.
