Been looking into a few options for the ignition, for ignition only what sensors do you require?

Is it purely a crank sensor and boost (MAP) sensor?

Just wondering what else is required thats all.

Seems simple enough to fit. Just want to figure out all the costs involved before deciding on which option to go for.

Currently looking at selling the van so if i do then i should have a fair budget for the new engine, may aswell do things right.

throttle pot
Air temp sensor
Water temp sensor
Crank sensor
Timing disc
MAP sensor
Lambda sensor

You need to budget for ?1000 to do it properly - and that's usign some second hand sensors, doing the mounting yourself, paying for the ECU, and loom parts and a rolling road session...

Just been reading the instruction manual for emerald. The more i read it the more i want one! Really gives you the ability to manage the engine well.
?1000 is pricey but hopefully will help the engine last and give the best "driveable" performance.

How much rolling road time would you actually need to get it set up? Is this a big part of the ?1000 as the ecu is only ?400. Sensors dont seem that expensive and the mounting is now problem.

get some crank discs lasered out at work FOC *smiley*

Which type of position sensor is the most reliable (and value for money!)

Cheers for the info dave.

I would also budget a few hundred quid for amp connectors and nice cable, you don't want all the cables the same colour. When I made my loom for the ecu, I made sure no two wires were the same colour, cost a bit, but when you have a fault, it's so easy to sort out

Yeah, i thought ?400 was fairly cheap, didnt realise prices were ex-vat on the website.

Still comes in at under ?500, just wondered what other bits were costly to bump it up to ?1000. *smiley*

Saw on the emerald site they milled the slots onto the crank damper, seems a nice neat option.

All good info here, ill move it into "how to" when some more has been added, useful thread!

Am I missing something here? Why do you need

throttle pot
Air temp sensor
Water temp sensor
Lambda sensor

for ignition only? I admit that they can be nice tuning aids but they are not used by the ECU to do the ignition timing. You only really need these if you are going full injection.

Or am I missing something?????

Milton Keynes

Emerald Price List Inlcuding VAT
Emerald ECU M3DK ?646 injection and ignition
Emerald ECU M3DK ?470 igniton only
Throttle Pot and plug ?30
Map Sensor..(2.5 bar absolute) ?82
Barometric Pressure Sensor ?42
Air or Water Temperature Sensor ?14
Full M3DK Mapping service ? 235

Total for injection & ignition ? 1049
Total for injection only ? 873

In my eyes V good value for injection and ignition, maybe debateable for ignition only. But I'm still getting one AND I wouldnt be surprised if you could reduce the cost a little be sourcing teh sensors yourself.

A Motec system is ball park ?1700 I think

Yeah, about ?630 without the RR'd mapping, if you put a lamda sensor on there you can map it yourself and save the ?200.
I'm not too sure, but I would say, your going to be able to get a slightly better performance from a mapped ignition rather than just a dizzy. Obviously you also have boost retard and other little bits like it being able to turn on a cooling fan and/or intercooler waterspray.
And you can always upgrade it, or move it onto a completely different car/ engine setup in years to come.

If you don't have a throttle pot then you have 2D mapping only, which is ok i guess, but for the slight extra effort and cost, much better to do the full hit.
