Hi, I just tried my new layshaft in and there's about 0.5mm of play in it, the haynes says this should be about 0.25, is there and solution to this that wont result in buying a new gearbox casing? has anyone had a bush fitted? I was also looking at this:

Any good?

Cheers, Kav

Just read another article that mentioned shim sheets, could this be cut to size and "wrapped" around the shaft to form a split bush?

Cheers, Kav

Are we talking axial or radial play?

Are we talking about the layshaft fitting in the gearbox casing, or the laygear on the layshaft?

You have a layshaft that is machined incorrectly.
Or a goosed transmission case.
Or, maybe someone will coment that you could have an A+ case and an A- layshaft and that these are different diameters (I have no idea if they are).

Someone will confirm before too long.

Have a look at the Mini Spares site for their tech articles on this subject ... some good information their.

There where differences between the A+ and A layshaft (some A+units had the older three bearing layshaft though so be careful!!!)

I have seen this time and time again ... usually the gearbox casing being worn. It might be worth measuring the bore in the gearbox casing to see if it's still round.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

If I was going to bush the gearbox case I'd bush both and line bore them .... probably cheaper to find a better case by that point.

try another layshaft even an old one just to see if the hole is worn.

but buy the sounds of it its either worn or the layshaft is the a series one and not a 3 step a plus item.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

If the layshaft is correct and you still have lift in the shaft then it is new gearbox casing time I am afraid.....

thanks for the replies ill do some test like checking the bore for ovality, is there an easy way to identify ifI have the correct layshaft? My gearbox is an 89 metro turbo.

cheers, kav

just tried the old layshaft it and this has half the movement of the new one, so could well be that looks like a trip to minispares for me then

Unless the layshaft is more worn than the casing, i can't actually see how this is possible as the casing is softer, then another layshaft wont help. Its not uncommon for casings to stretch or go oval even with std turbo engines. This is an area that i personally dont allow any tollerance in at all, it either fits snug or i find another case.

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

How much would I be looking at for a new case? should I be looking at new or recon?

You'd have to start looking at a second hand case, you can get whole s/h boxes for about £30-£40 normally.

find a case off a 998 a+ : would have had far less torque acting against it (laygear and mainshaft try to force themselves apart..)

The two holes in the casing are the same for A and A+. 3 days, OK? :)

I've never experienced this, but if I ever did, I'd ditch the casing in three seconds flat. I guess you could put a sleeve in there, but why? Get a different casing.
