My turbo engine has stood round for a good few years now, I fancied getting it running natrally aspirated as the turbine shaft is not spinning perfectly freely. so i have removed the turbo, oil cooler and associalted pipework.

I have filled it up with oil, connected an oil pressure guage and cranked it over, still no carb yet. Only to find the guage didn't move a millimetre. I stopped after 5 or so seconds so hopefully no damage done. any ideas what could be going on?

Thanks.

its dead. give me the engine

you could back feed the oil down the hose on the front of the block and into the pump as this normally works

but i'd prefer you just to give up and give me the engine

Keep trying, it will take longer than 5 seconds to build oil pressure up. As long as it is just cranking over it shouldn't hurt anything.
As TurboShed says sometimes on stubborn cases you have to resort to back feeding oil to the pump, this makes the pump lobes "wet" and increases the suction of the pump of oil up the pickup pipe from the sump.
Whatever you do, do not let it fire until it has shown at least 20psi on the gauge.

yep, as above whip the plugs out, take the bolt out the oil transfer pipe and pour some oil in, then pour some more in, reatach and spin over.

If your really flash get an old oil transfer bolt put a fitting on it and force some oil in using a compressor or something, that way it finds its way into all the bearings.

I've heard over tigntening the pump can cause it to leak down, can cut through the gasket or something...

yep - turning the engine backwards whilst filling the oil hole is what has always worked for me on the most stubborn motors.

I also put a good few squirts of oil through the spark plug holes aswell...

Pffff, every time a start my Mini it takes 5-10 seconds of idling before I get any pressure! I wonder how long I can nurse it along like that.

What brand pump is it?

the pump "should" hold oil in it for quite some time, but in reality i think this isn't the case, I suspect on many pumps the oil leaks out between the back plate making for a lazy oil pressure on start up, i don't think the clearances in some pumps help either.

Basicaly always buy a good quality pump, the avonbar one is well regarded.

I always get a good pump gasket, the black ones seem to be a bit thicker, the beige ones in rebuild kits i don't trust, they seem very thin and "brittle" to me.

i use minisapres pumps and blueprint them as per ACD. Some of these pumps are really shocking with lobe-casing gaps all over the place and end float nearing 15thou. All of that cant help keep oil in the pump and i can belive it when you say you have oil pressure probs.

For dried up engines definatly backfill with oil, from what i've seen you'll have to turn the engine backwards around 2-3times to be completely sucsessfull.

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

butterpopy,

as andyeh says the clarances are a problem. I have had issues with minispares pumps in the past, and although they seem better of late they arn't great, next opertunity I'd bin the pump for an avonbar one.

My minispares pumps (yes, ive tried one after the other) all took seconds of running to build up oil pressure.

All I did, was swap the pump for the Avonbar one, and hey presto - oil pressure on the starter, even before the engine has fired...

MS pumps are never going to be on my shopping list...
