Anyone know anything about these beasties... (circa 2001 model)

A mate has convinced himself to buy one - and now I'm looking and thinking, hmmmmm......

So - anyone have any personal experiences or know of anything as regards what to watch out for / what goes wrong - and how well they go (LOL)!

Cheers,

Dave, best place to look is RS246.com, do plenty of reading on common faults, like turbo failures, boost leaks, there's shed loads of info to be found.
Buying, auotrader and pistonheads are the best way to see what the markets like at the moment.
Its a very specialized car and beyond the scope of most audi dealers, a FASH means sod all.!!
Saloons are cheaper than Avants.
Are we talking a US model or UK?

RS6 .... well I've not owned one but my uncle did and I spent a fair bit of time driving it.

How does it go ...... well most 911s will struggle to play with you in most real world situations (but will have you on the track).

The brakes are excellent if looked after and the correct pads used, some of the aftermarket pads are shocking though!!

As a tow vehicle you have to be careful to get the manuals on the move as the clutch is a little grabby and you can easily make a prat of yourself.

Autos, which most are, seem to be very nice with no real vices other than a desier to change gear far too early in anything other than sport mode and can catch you out at multi roundabout situtations (not a problem in yanky doodle I'd have though).

There are issues and as Rich stated most Audi dealers are somewhat lost with them. I have friends in a VW / Audi specialist centre who warned me off the AllRoad for the same reasons ... most haven't been looked after properly and are just waiting to fail in a very expensive way!

RS246.com is a good source of information and fault diagonosis etc.

Above all though it's an Audi, which means it won't go wrong much if looked after properly but when it does ....... o)

Would I have one myself ..... hell yeah!!

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Nothing. I'm going to start making extra payments on the mortgage and make my F-150 my daily driver.

Now THAT makes sense LOL!

Audi looks nice, its kind of like mine apart from it isn't an estate, has twice as many turbos, 6 more valves, a different fuel, and 0.2 more litres!

I'd love an S4 or even S3. I would say youd struggle to get one in the UK for that price.

I like the latest cupra, I'd also add an RS Focus in there too actually. An imp? Blame my dad for that. Yeah ok a 911 turbo too, why not. I would also like a Shelby Cobra, maybe just a kit so I can mess about with it, a late '90s mustang with a blower, a variety of TVRs, say a Speed 6 and a nice Cerbera and a Nismo 400R. Think that's it!

Ah well its a US based question then :)
Audiworld.com is your knowledge base for tuners / suppliers on your side of the pond.
A few simple pointers.
Boost leaks - caused by blown pipes etc as you would guess, the main culprits being the TBB (throttle body boot) and 'F' hose (both under the front engine cover) removal is the only recommended way to inspect for slits in the rubber. While under there replace the two recirc dumpvalves with the later 710N type fitted to TT's.
The other source of boost leaks is the end cap on the intercoolers which can come loose.
What happens is (this is the scary bit*evil*) that the turbo's apparently 'overspeed' trying to produce the requested boost with a leak and die, rapidly!! Its an engine out job to replace and I believe a very large bill! GULP!!
On the early, prefacelift models, Audi had a poor design of exhaust manifold in which the inside separated and sawed through the EGT sensor, as you can guess bits of metal heading into the turbine = big bill!! Audi deny there is a problem!!! Also the early cars had a problem with the oil feed to the turbo's, this was often replaced under warranty or like mine when the turbo's went at 55,000 miles.
For more power (about 350-450??bhp) look at RS4 components, KO4 turbo's, manifolds, fuel pumps etc etc.
More than that, 450-600bhp your looking at modded KO4's, RS6 hybrids!!
Brakes are shite as standard, its a big heavy car to stop!
Bit of oil use is normal.
I could list loads of 'issues' but don't want to spend all night typing!!
In a nutshell, lots of things to be aware of, and check / replace:(, plenty of scope for large power upgrades*smiley* comfy, practical, and best of all, when warmed up and running 100% FAST AS FUCK

Rich

PS Get Vag-Com as well, its brilliant :)
